King's College Choir Reveals VERY Secret Way Of Reaching Unearthly High Notes

If you've been wondering how King's College Choir reaches those incredibly high notes, your curiosity can finally be put to rest.

In their performance of "Miserere Mei Deus, Gregorio Allegri" the choir demonstrates their extremely innovative way of hitting pitches that almost don't sound human. Don't worry, they aren't eunuchs.

"High male voices have been part of the choir sound for more than 500 years," says Rev. Richard Lloyd Morgan, King's College Chaplain, in the video above. "After a lengthy consultation process, during which we learned that the surgical solution was surprisingly unpopular with the choral scholars, someone in the chemistry department came up with a simple solution -- and now all we need is a very large tank of helium."

Of course, this was part of an April Fool's day stunt that had us all laughing and wanting more.

Katy Perry Debuts Artwork For Latest Single, 'Birthday'

Katy Perry wants to wish you a happy birthday ... kind of.

The "Roar" singer took to Twitter on Thursday to debut the cover of her next single, "Birthday," off of the "Prism" album. The image, which she captioned, "In honor of #TBT may I present the cover of my NEXXXT single, BIRTHDAY," took advantage of Throwback Thursday with an old-school family photo, in which her sister's face is blurred.

Shortly after posting the image, Perry tweeted that if her 52 million followers could manage to get #BIRTHDAY trending, that she would de-blur her sassy sidekick. When the tag began to trend, Perry revealed her sister's face. Birthday balloons and a cake have been half-heartedly photoshopped onto the picture, making the whole thing look a bit like a cheap birthday card.

Listen to "Birthday" and decide for yourself whether the artwork fits the tune.

David Letterman Retiring After 33 Years As Late Night Host

David Letterman is retiring in 2015 after 33 years as a late night host.

Letterman announced the news during a taping of Thursday's episode of "Late Show." He called CBS president Leslie Moonves before the program, "And I said ‘Leslie, it’s been great, you’ve been great, and the network has been great, but I’m retiring.'"

The late night host explained that "Moonves, he and I have had a relationship for years and years and years, and we have had this conversation in the past, and we agreed that we would work together on this circumstance and the timing of this circumstance."

"I just want to reiterate my thanks for the support from the network, all of the people who have worked here, all of the people in the theater, all the people on the staff, everybody at home, thank you very much," Letterman said, then joked, "What this means now, is that Paul and I can be married ... we don’t have the timetable for this precisely down – I think it will be at least a year or so, but sometime in the not too distant future, 2015 for the love of God, in fact, Paul and I will be wrapping things up."

By the time Letterman retires, he will have hosted CBS' "Late Show With David Letterman" for 22 years. He previously hosted NBC's "Late Night" for 11 years.

Moonves said in a statement that "we knew this day was getting closer" when Letterman went with a one-year extension for his contract, "but that doesn’t make the moment any less poignant for us."

"For 21 years, David Letterman has graced our Network’s air in late night with wit, gravitas and brilliance unique in the history of our medium," Moonves stated. "During that time, Dave has given television audiences thousands of hours of comedic entertainment, the sharpest interviews in late night, and brilliant moments of candor and perspective around national events. He’s also managed to keep many celebrities, politicians and executives on their toes – including me."

"There is only one David Letterman," Moonves added. "His greatness will always be remembered here, and he will certainly sit among the pantheon of this business."

Somehow, the Irish manage to make everything just a wee bit more awesome.

Case in point? This incredible surprise wedding dance a groom and his guests performed for the lucky bride.

Now, we've seen some amazing wedding dance videos before: this wedding entrance dance down the aisle, the Harlem Shake during the ceremony, the BFF's Britney Spears dance at the reception -- but this one, which took place at the wedding of Mairead McCargo and Rob Wilson in Belfast, has us actually saying, "OMG! How did they do that?"

You have to see it for yourself above. Then, thank us in the comments section.

Decades Later, Retired Teacher Mails Very Special Letters To Thousands Of Former Students

One retired high school teacher in Canada has a surprise for his former students that is 20 years in the making.

In 1994, Bruce Farrer's ninth grade English class at Bert Fox Community High School in Saskatchewan, got a special assignment, reported the National Post. Farrer asked his students to write a 10-page letter to their future selves, which he then promised to mail to them 20 years later.

Farrer kept his promise to those students, as well as the thousands of others he taught during his more than 40-year career.

"I was trying to think of some assignment that would be special, and it just sort of came up that, well, I'll try this assignment," Farrer said on CBC Morning Edition.

Although Farrer retired in 2002, he took several boxes of the letters from his former students with him, and began the long and difficult process of tracking them down and mailing the letters.

One former student, Scott Fulton, became a teacher himself and even taught for a while at the high school he went to as a teenager, according to CBC News. He got his letter last week.

"I was just feeling honored and grateful," Fulton told the outlet about receiving the handwritten letter. "Amazed and inspired at the work of Mr. Farrer."

Another former student, DJ Anardi, got the letter from his past self about a month ago. It read "Hey you good-looking guy, how is your life?" according to National Post. Anardi's letter talked about a crush he had at the time on the woman who is now his wife.

"I think our society now is a society of non-commitment," Farrer told the outlet. "We say we’re going to do something, whether it’s in a marriage, or with our kids or maybe even with our organizations we join, and some little thing ticks us off and we think 'Enough of that, I’m walking out' … I think it’s important to have a sense of commitment, and maybe in a minor way, the kids see I value that."

Kilauea's Volatile Beauty Captured At Night (PHOTOS)

Each of the Hawaiian islands are or once were active volcanoes, springing forth from a hotspot in the middle of the Pacific Plate. Kilauea, one of five active volcanoes in Hawaii, has erupted continuously, more or less, since it formed some 300,000 to 600,000 years ago. It might be the world’s most active volcano, according to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.

Kilauea means “spewing” in Hawaiian; it is a hot spot for tourists, a source of vog, and the home of Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess, legendary for her fiery temper. Kilauea's Puʻu ʻŌʻō vent celebrated its 31st anniversary in January as one of the longest, continual eruptions in the world.

The volcano's size -- 4,190 feet above sea level with magma and lava coming from as deep as 37 miles into the earth -- make it impressive in the daylight, but its true colors come out at night, which is why talented and daring photographers regularly make pilgrimages to pay their respects.

Live vicariously through these pictures (including the infamous lava kiss heard round the world) made by photographers John Hook, Dallas Nagata White, CJ Kale, Tom Anderson, Bill Shupp, and PF Bentley -- people lucky enough to gape into a hole where the earth is made.

Meet Mark McCloud, The World's Leading Collector Of LSD Art

$

Most artists haven't been arrested by the DEA and investigated by the FBI. Then again, most artists don't have the over 33,000 tabs of LSD in their possession. How's that for an intro?

beatles

Mark McCloud is the world's leading collector of "Blotter Art," which, for the more straight-laced set, is another way of saying he collects the small papers used to transport and relay acid, or LSD. McCloud's collected the stuff since the '60s, framing and hanging the trippy paper trails in his now legendary Victorian home in San Francisco.

The tabs are inactive at this point, leading any who attempt to arrest McCloud for intent to manufacture and distribute narcotics to be gravely disappointed. Though the hallucinatory properties of the drug are gone, the art that blotter manufacturers created to adorn the tiny objects remains; art that, McCloud is convinced, affected the flavor of one's trip, if only subconsciously.

ud

McCloud was raised in Buenos Aires until he was sent to a boarding school in Claremont, California when he was 12. At 13 he tried acid in Santa Barbara, an experience that merited the epic summation: "I was blind, but then I could see." But it wasn't until acid imagery became popular in 1968 that McCloud started collecting acid tabs, cataloguing the variety of minuscule masterpieces that were designed foremost with a tongue in mind.

"At first I was keeping them in the freezer, which was a problem because I kept eating them," McCloud explained to VICE, "but then the Albert Hofmann acid came out, and then I thought, Fuck, I’m framing this. That’s when I realized, Hey, if I try to swallow this I’ll choke on the frame." And thus, a project was born.

The illicit blotter collection has grown over time, surpassing the collections of the FBI and DEA. McCloud has watched acid art trends rise and fall, with paper appearances by "Captain L" (for LSD), Mickey Mouse, Robert Crumb's "Mr. Natural" and even the face of Mikhail Gorbachev. When jammed together, the serial images form their own sort of psychedelic experience -- a niche history of art, consciousness and the place the two intersect.

"You could think of him as the Andy Warhol of blotter," Juxtapoz commented, "making a post-modern art form out of the psychedelic experience." Whether you come to reminisce about the '70s, yearn for the San Francisco you never experienced or see some very tiny art, we suggest you pay his home museum a visit.

Clayton Pettet Finally Performs 'Art School Stole My Virginity' (NSFW)

After months of media hype, an art school student who claimed he would have gay sex and lose his virginity as part of a live performance piece followed through with his plans -- though not in the way many expected.

Last October, Clayton Pettet, a 19-year-old art student at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London, announced that he would have sex in front of a crowd as part of a performance piece called "Art School Stole My Virginity."

At the time he stated, "I've held on to my virginity for 19 years, and I'm not throwing it away lightly. Basically it's like I am losing the stigma around virginity," according to the Daily Star. He added, "I want the audience to see if anything has changed between me and my partner."

Originally slated to take place in late January, the piece was later rescheduled for April 2 at the former BBC London headquarters, which now functions as a performance space.

Well... it happened. But Pettet definitely did not have anal sex as many were led to believe he would.

Instead, approximately 120 people reportedly packed the ticketed event and were then asked to insert a banana into Pettet's mouth a number of times.

One of the attendees told Dazed Digital:
The booth was very, very small. I crouched to get in. Pettet was sat inside, still in his pants, with two piles of bananas in front of him.

"I am your anal virgin," he said. "You are my partner. Pick up a banana." I immediately started to panic: penetrating a 19-year-old was not on my to-do list tonight, even if it's with a piece of fruit. "Now penetrate with my mouth eight times."

I gratefully slid the banana into Pettet's mouth as he stared me down. Then he took the banana out of my hand, snapped it in two and told me to leave.

A full description of the performance piece can be read at Dazed Digital, as well as an interview with Pettet.

In the interview the artist claims that he never explicitly promised he would have anal sex during the performance piece and said, "I think if people were expecting something else, it shows what they really wanted. They didn’t want an art piece, they wanted to see me have sex. If they came for the art, they wouldn’t be as disappointed -- they’d know there were things to read between the lines for."

Those who attended the event seemed to have a mixed response to the piece and took to Twitter to express their opinions:

Why You Should Listen To 'Another Damn Rape Poem'

"We wouldn't need so many damn rape poems if America had listened the first time."

That's just one of many powerful lines from "Rape Poem To End All Rape Poems," written and performed by the Rutgers University slam team. The performance piece explores rape culture, victim-blaming and what it's like to be a woman in a country where someone is sexually assaulted every two minutes.

The performers assume, perhaps correctly, that audiences are tired of hearing rape stories and fighting back against sexual assault -- but refuse to stop making their voices heard.

"We wouldn't need so many damn rape poems if our bodies were ours alone," they say. Another line that hits home: "Don't tell me she was asking for it."

Their piece ends with a bone-chilling declaration: "The rape poems will continue until there's no damn material left."

Associated Press photographer and Pulitzer Prize-winner Anja Niedringhaus was killed while covering the upcoming presidential election in Afghanistan on Friday.

Niedringhaus caught some of the most stunning moments in history -- from 9/11 and the Iraq War to women's rights in Afghanistan and Olympic athletes. "Her attention to detail, composition and light come together to not only tell insightful stories but also to create works of art," the AP said in its obituary for Niedringhaus on Friday.

AP’s president and CEO Gary Pruitt described Niedringhaus as "spirited, intrepid and fearless."

What if your favorite fictional heroes were vulnerable to a weak economy?

Graphic designer Gerald Bear has created a series he calls "Unconventional Heroes" to showcase the bargain-buy vehicles of the greatest heroes from television and film -- if they suddenly were to fall on hard times.

Similar to Darren Rawlings' "If They Could Transform" project, which shows iconic cars from movies and TV re-imagined as Transformers, Bear's work casts a number of our favorite heroes' cars in a much cheaper light.

Bruce Wayne is saddled with an old Citroen 2CV instead of the famed Batmobile, Starsky and Hutch are forced to drive a Fiat Panda in place of their Ford Gran Torino, and Doc Brown's time machine from "Back to the Future" is a lowly Fiat 500 instead of the gull-winged DeLorean.

Take a look at these works (below), and visit Bear's Facebook page to see the rest of his creations.

Thankfully, friendly border patrol agents are not entirely unheard of. Still, though, it is nice to be reminded of systematic problems through a little comedy.
