Tesla Coils Perform 'Inspector Gadget' Theme Song (VIDEO)

Want to enjoy a bit of weird science with a dash of nostalgia?

If so, this video from ARC ATTACKMUSIC is just the ticket. It features a pair of "singing Tesla coils" performing a rather unusual cover of the theme song from the 1980's cartoon "Inspector Gadget." Just check it out above.

Sometimes called a zeusaphone, the singing Tesla coil is manipulated to produce high-voltage, low-current sparks. A switch in the frequency of the sparks generates the music.

This is by no means the first time Nikola Tesla's mesmerizing 19th Century invention has been used to create music. For another recent example, listen to this recent cover of AWOLnation's hit song "Sail."

Amy Smart On 'Justified' Is NOT Charmed By Raylan Givens

As Raylan Givens on "Justified," Timothy Olyphant has managed to charm his way into the good graces of virtually every woman -- and several men -- that he's met over the course of the show's five seasons. But this week, he may have finally met his match. Amy Smart joined the cast as Allison, a social worker who's "dated enough lawmen to know she isn’t interested in dating any more," as Smart explained to The New York Daily News.

Right off the bat, she made him work for it, refusing to give him her number. She told Raylan that he could use his Marshall skills to track her down, which he did. Buddy TV's Alan Danzis loved how Allison cut through Raylan's B.S. almost immediately. He's not used to squaring off against someone who isn't affected by his charm. That should make theirs an interesting relationship to watch develop. Only time will tell if Smart is still around when "Justified" wraps for good after next year's Season 6.

Amy Smart continues on "Justified" every Tuesday at 10 p.m. EST on FX.

'Wonder Twins' Movie Poster Revealed To Be Fake By Creator

A poster surfaced mid-November last year touting a "Wonder Twins" movie coming in 2014 courtesy of Warner Bros. Supposedly starring couple Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher as the sibling leads, rumors of a viral marketing attempt linked to the upcoming "Entourage" movie made its rounds, threaded by the HBO show's inclusion of an "Aquaman" movie and the film's 2014 release date. However, Marc Tyler Nobleman, author of books on the creators of "Superman" and "Batman," has debunked this theory, proving the "Wonder Twins" movie to be nothing more than a well-crafted hoax.

Participating in a conversation on the BatPodcast, Nobleman discovered that his host, Pat Evans, was the man behind the movie's poster, and reversed the roles to get all the details. According to Evans, he created the poster for a bit of fun in response to the onslaught of superhero movies throughout the past few years (that will absolutely continue through 2014), deciding that the "Wonder Twins" would be a most "preposterous" film for anyone to make.

"They were perfect, because it was just unbelievable enough a concept that it could be true, if that makes sense," Evans said. “'So crazy it might work' kind of logic. And Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher were kind of the clincher because they are in the media a lot now as a real-life couple. So it added that extra layer of 'huh?'”

When asked if he liked the Wonder Twins, Evans joked, "Who doesn’t love the Wonder Twins? Seriously. Just ask my kids, Zan and Jayna."

You can read the rest of the interview on Nobleman's blog.

Lupita Nyong'o Had A Checklist Of Celebrities She Simply Had To Meet

Lupita Nyong'o turned plenty of heads with her gorgeous gown at the Golden Globe Awards. The "12 Years a Slave" star looked like she fit right in among Hollywood's elite, but she admitted on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" that she was starstruck at every turn. "I felt like my TV had broken and they’d all fallen into my living room or something," she said of the star power surrounding her.

Later, she admitted that she had a checklist of celebrities she wanted to meet. At the top of that list was Leonardo DiCaprio. She first fell in love with him after watching "Romeo + Juliet," so was thrilled when she got to meet him. She said he was very sweet, and his mom took a picture of the two of them together.

She took to Instagram to chronicle her magical night, posting pics with more stars from her "checklist," like Jessica Chastain, Lena Dunham, and Jared Leto. Now that she's met so many of them, she might be able to relax and enjoy the upcoming Academy Awards. While nominations won't be announced until Thursday, her film is sure to be up for a few -- and she might find her name called out as well.

"Jimmy Kimmel Live" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. EST on ABC.

The good people of TIME magazine have come up with the best parlor game of awards season: "Make Your Own Oscar-Winning Movie With One Click." Using IMDb keywords for Best Picture nominees from 1970 onward, TIME's fake-movie generator comes up with plot summaries for nonexistent movies that would probably win Oscars if they did exist. Some examples:

Communism ("JFK"), family relationships ("E.T. the Extra Terrestrial") and trust ("Capote") collide for an eccentric ("Capote") police officer ("Capote") and a Native American ("Capote") publisher ("As Good As It Gets") in Vietnam ("Born on the Fourth of July")

A gay ("Five Easy Pieces") investor ("Moulin Rouge!") copes with terminal illness ("Terms of Endearment"), frustration ("The Godfather Part II") and ethics ("Chariots of Fire") in New York City ("Terms of Endearment").

This is fun! Prepare for Thursday's Oscar nominations by playing along over at TIME.

Sam Harris's 'Ham: Slices Of A Life' Details 'Star Search' Champ's Personal Triumphs, Showbiz Dish

$

Sam Harris says he approached writing the 16 essays that appear in his first book, Ham: Slices of a Life, with the same vigor displayed on his nine studio albums and in his various stage and screen performances.

“I’m a storyteller, whether I’m doing it through a song or something I’ve written or something that someone else has written,” the 52-year-old actor, singer and first-time author, who shot to fame as the champion of “Star Search” during the show’s premiere 1983 season, said. “I’m a punctuation freak and a rhythm freak. It’s just a different kind of music.”

Ham: Slices of a Life, which hit shelves Jan. 14, pairs Harris’s glitzy show business anecdotes with quirky musings on his professional tribulations. Included among the 16 individually titled essays are amusing, yet poignant, recollections about the author’s embattled childhood in Sand Springs, Okla., his longtime friendship with Liza Minnelli and his marriage to husband Danny Jacobsen, with whom he tied the knot in 2008. In addition, Harris doesn’t shy away from grim details of an adolescent suicide attempt (“As Good As It Gets”) or his longtime struggles with substance abuse (“I Know, Baby. I Know”).

Sam Harris sings "I Can't Make You Love Me"

“I’m not interested in writing something that’s fluffy or just a recounting of something,” Harris told The Huffington Post. In fact, he found as much delight in recounting minute details of a seemingly routine, day-to-day activity as he did recalling Minnelli's 2002 wedding to the "Man Whose Name Shall Go Unmentioned" and his one-on-one encounters with stars like Aretha Franklin, Bette Midler and Madonna: “This isn’t a tell-all Hollywood book; it’s about what something means to me, what something taught me or what I’ve discovered about myself along the way.”

The new collection has drawn the inevitable comparisons to David Sedaris; while each of Harris’s essays utilizes the non-linear, non-chronological style favored by Sedaris, his tone is significantly different. Nonetheless, what Harris may lack in Sedaris’s razor-sharp wit, he makes up for in refreshingly self-effacing observations and playful, camp humor. Witness Ham’s centerpiece “Liver,” which sees Harris compare his husband to a washer-dryer set (“It has taken me too long to get through his operator’s manual to ever consider a new model”) before outlining the blind optimism that has carried him through bleaker moments in both his career and private life. “My experiences of career-liver qualify me as a card-carrying member of the North American Meat Processors Association,” he writes.

Sam Harris sings "I Am Changing" from "Dreamgirls"

Although Harris has become an outspoken advocate of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights in recent years, he kept mum about his sexuality during the early years of his career, even though it was an open secret among his co-stars and industry insiders. It’s a point he is particularly frank about throughout Ham: Slices of a Life and says he now regrets in hindsight.

“When I was growing up, there were no role models,” he said. “There was not an actor, an athlete or a politician who said they were gay and happy to be so.” Of his eventual decision to come out publicly as gay, he added, “There came a point where I was like, ‘OK, this is just bullsh*t. I felt like a liar, and I was. If I do have a public platform at all, then I want to talk to that kid who is being bullied and feels alone.”

In a move that is sure to please fans of his neo-vaudevillian stage persona, Harris has opted to launch Ham the only way he knows how: extravagantly, theatrically and, most of all, big. He’ll introduce fans to the collection with an accompanying “Liter-Usical” tour that will kick off at New York’s 54 Below on Jan. 15 and continue with live performances in San Francisco, Hollywood and other U.S. cities. Harris’ set will include tunes by U2, Bonnie Raitt and Stephen Sondheim along with spoken segments of Ham: Slices of a Life crafted into a “one-man show that plays like a musical theater piece, with an emotional arc,” he said.

Sam Harris on "Star Search"

Pairing a book launch with a concert tour seems like an exasperating venture, particularly for a working father (Harris and Jacobsen adopted their son, Cooper Atticus Harris-Jacobsen, in 2008). But it’s one that Harris seems to be taking in stride, citing “the patience of a saint” that parenthood has taught him, and he’s hoping that Ham is just the first step in his literary journey.

“It’s something I hope to be doing more of … exploring stories about my childhood, show business, parenting and marriage, and continuing to find a voice and a perspective about events in my life than seem singular or unusual,” he said. As for a prospective title, he added with a laugh, “Well, the first book was called Ham, maybe the second one should be called Cheese.”

Sam Harris kicks off his Ham: Slices of a Life 'Liter-Usical' show at New York's 54 Below on Jan. 15. Check out more information on his NYC show here; more details on additional dates here.

This Performance Made Katy Perry Almost Cry Her Eyelashes Off

With all the synth beats, autotuning and explicit lyrics, there's little about pop music most would call "traditional."

Which makes this cover of Katy Perry's "Roar," performed by the China National Orchestra, even more extraordinary. The orchestra adapted the pop star's hit single for traditional Chinese instruments, then performed it last Sunday to welcome Perry on her first trip to the country.

Perry "almost cried [her] eyelashes off," reports the Shanghaiist, which quoted the star thus: "I've never heard my music being played like that. It's very spiritual to me."

China's CCTV reports the effort involved nearly 100 Chinese musicians, who gifted Perry a Chinese instrument known as a "Xun" afterward.

'Arvind,' Evan Roberts Film, Featured In Kickstarter Campaign

Award-winning filmmaker Evan Roberts is back with a new film, "Arvind," that chronicles the experiences of a teenage boy as he embarks on a journey to document the story of his life.

Arvind Hathaway, the subject of Roberts' film, was 3 years old when his parents were going through a divorce. During the trial, Hathaway's mother attempted to poison both him and his brother, resulting in her incarceration and being served with a lifetime restraining order by her children.

Roberts asked Hathaway if he could document his life throughout the course of his own personal creative endeavor, and Hathaway decided to write a play about the story of his life that features his mother as the main character. Hathaway's play will run from Jan. 30-Feb. 1 at the University of Texas Laboratory Theater.

"LGBT youth, and specifically LGBT youth of color, aren't represented often in film and media," Roberts told The Huffington Post. "This lack of representation in the media can make someone feel invisible to the rest of society. I think it's important that minorities groups, such as queer youth, are depicted in ways that are affirming and aspirational but also authentic and complex. I also want to tell a universal story that many people can find an entry point into, and where sexuality is part of a character's development, not a defining characteristic. I hope audiences will relate to Arvind and connect with him through his experience of bringing his story to the world -- and perhaps be inspired to do the same."

'Ride Along' Review: Kevin Hart And Ice Cube Deliver Laughs

$

Joining the ranks of odd-couple police comedies, "Ride Along" delivers laughs over action, with loudmouthed funnyman Kevin Hart driving the hilarity.

Stepping into the role of rapper-turned-actor Ice Cube's sidekick in this buddy-cop farce, Hart had a lot to live up to. Cube (real name O'Shea Jackson) and Chris Tucker were classic quipsters in the 1995 pot-comedy "Friday" that started it all, and when then-newcomer Mike Epps dropped in on the sequel, his chemistry with Cube led to a third film. The formula is always the same: Cube, who is level-headed for the most part, gets into trouble with his ridiculous sidekick. "Ride Along" is no different, and that's OK. It's a blueprint we've come to rely on for nearly 20 years.

With roots in stand-up, Hart continues to make a successful transition from stage to screen, with three films released in the past year and five scheduled through 2015.

In "Ride Along," Hart's rapid banter comes off naturally, as if he's always improvising. Cube's no-nonsense approach, punctuated by his steady straight-face, offers an ideal contrast.

Ben (Hart), who has just been accepted into the Atlanta police academy, is ready to ask his girlfriend Angela (Tika Sumpter) to marry him. But first, he's determined to get the approval of her older brother, James (Cube), an Atlanta police officer. But at 5 feet, 4 inches tall, Ben is far from James' biggest fan. He'd pictured his sister with a brawny athlete, "not the mascot," he says. In order to prove he's worthy of asking for Angela's hand, Ben must accompany James on a 24-hour patrol of Atlanta.

Unfortunately, Ben doesn't do a great job of being tough or discrete. He likens police work to his "Call of Duty" video gaming and calls Angela "bouncy butt" after telling her, "You make me think of rainbows because we both love colors."

It's one of many absurdly funny lines Hart delivers while trying to prove himself to James. And their exchange, reminiscent of smooth-talking Will Smith and the foolish Martin Lawrence in "Bad Boys," is consistently amusing.

When James requests a day of "Code 126" cases, cop lingo for an annoying situation, Ben is put to the test as he attempts to get a crew of loitering bikers away from a storefront and put a drunken grocery store customer in custody.

Though primarily a flunky in any physical task — he can't even shoot a shotgun without its recoil hurling him backward — Ben uncovers a number of clues throughout the day, helping James with his hunt for the ruthless and allusive Atlanta kingpin Omar.

Despite failing all of James' tests, Ben refuses to bow down and accuses James of having trust issues. "That's why you don't have a partner," he says, foreshadowing a sequel.

After fellow officers (played by John Leguizamo and Bryan Callen) set up James during a supposed bust, Ben comes to his rescue, which wins him big points with James.

This predictable "Training Day"-goes-slapstick romp, directed by Tim Story ("Think Like a Man"), is far from innovative and reaches an "oh, lord" level when Cube says a few of his signature lyrics, including "Today was a good day" from his 1992 album "The Predator." But since the whole film is full of camp — down to James' black muscle car and the police captain who won't get off his back — moments like these don't feel out of place and Cube and Hart are a welcomed new pair.

"52 Tuesdays" is a groundbreaking new film that explores issues affecting the transgender community and the way transitioning intimately affects family dynamics.

Directed by Sophie Hyde, the film follows 16-year-old Billie who is forced to live with her father for a year while her mother transitions from female to male. The pair, who are extremely close, agree to meet every Tuesday during their year apart.

Additionally, a press release for the film sent to The Huffington Post reveals, "The filmmakers had set themselves the same rule, that they could only shoot on Tuesdays up until midnight and only consecutively, so whatever filmed on that day is what happens in the story on that day." "52 Tuesdays" is slated to premiere at the Sundance Film Festival later this month.

16 Terrible Movies That Should Have Gotten Razzie Nominations

After the announcement of Oscar nominations on Thursday, we can steel ourselves for an incessant stream of articles declaring which of the year's beloved movies and performances were shut out. In the meantime, however, a more pressing set of neglected films is upon us: those that were omitted from the 34th annual Golden Raspberry Awards. As expected, "Grown Ups 2," "After Earth" and "The Lone Ranger" were among the most-nominated movies. But what about Ridley Scott's much-detested "The Counselor"? And nothing for the dull, gaudy "A Good Day to Die Hard"? Razzie voters have taken a page out of the Academy's playbook and left us with a handful of so-called snubs, which raises the question: Were we the only ones forced to endure the painful attempt at slapstick comedy known as "Identity Thief"?

Check out the Razzie nominations, and then peruse our list of 2013's terrible movies not recognized by the pseudo-awards.

'American Horror Story' Season 4 Will Be Set In 1950

Get ready for some classic 1950s horror.

As is to be expected, "American Horror Story" creator Ryan Murphy has been elusive about what we can expect in Season 4 of the hit FX series.

But on Wednesday (Jan. 15), Murphy finally divulged a few details.

“It’s set in 1950,” Murphy exclusively told EW. “If you look historically what happened in the year 1950, there’s some more clues in that year. It’s a period piece. We try and do the opposite of what we’ve done before. Jessica Lange has already started practicing her German accent so I’m very excited!”

Although "Coven" (the show's current installment) is set in present day, the series is known to jump from one time period to another. "Coven" has some flashbacks to the Salem Witch Trials, and Season 2 ("Asylum") was set mostly in the 1960s.

Needless to say, we can't wait for more Season 4 details to emerge.

Texas, Ohio Fight Over Air Force One Where Lyndon B. Johnson Took Oath Of Office

By Jon Herskovitz
AUSTIN, Texas, Jan 15 (Reuters) - The foundation that backs the library for President Lyndon Baines Johnson is locking horns with the Air Force museum in Ohio over an Air Force One jet that Johnson admirers believe belongs in Texas.
The LBJ Foundation is seeking to have the modified Boeing 707 that came into service under President John F. Kennedy and in which Johnson took the oath of the presidency hours after Kennedy's assassination, transported to Austin and put on display near the LBJ Presidential Library.
"It would mean so much and it would become one of the most popular tourist destinations in Texas," said Tom Johnson, chairman emeritus of the LBJ Foundation.
Even though the plane served as the primary presidential jet from 1962 to 1972 - from Kennedy through Richard Nixon - the foundation believes it is inextricably linked to the Johnson presidency.
Along with the move and display at the LBJ library on the University of Texas campus, the foundation also wants to restore the interior of the plane, also known as Special Air Mission (SAM) 26000, to better reflect the state it was in when it was used as the primary presidential plane.
There is a separate Air Force One plane on display at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Library in California, which is on loan from the U.S. Air Force.
The LBJ Foundation, which has identified sources of funding for the move, display and interior restoration, is hoping the Air Force will lend out this plane in a similar fashion.
"They have many, many spectacular planes at Dayton. We just want one of them," said Johnson, who is not related to the 36th U.S. President.
The National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, said the plane is staying in Ohio.
"The museum is not considering a donation or loan of SAM 26000 to the LBJ Library & Museum or to any other entity," museum spokesman Rob Bardua said in an email.
The plane was used by U.S. presidents through 1992. The museum sees the plane that carried presidents, heads of state and other dignitaries as an important historic aircraft.
"It was built to indicate American air superiority to the world and was not uniquely identified to one president," Bardua said.
The plane flew Nixon to China and the Soviet Union for historic meetings at the height of the Cold War. It was also used by former Secretary of State James Baker for talks with Iraqi leaders about removing their troops from Kuwait ahead of the 1991 Gulf War.
The plane is painted to reflect its exterior in 1963 and the interior is configured for its use in 1998, when it was delivered to the museum. (Reporting by Jon Herskovitz, editing by Scott Malone and Gunna Dickson)

The story goes that Norman Rockwell, seeking authenticity, wanted to rip holes in the soldiers’s shirt. The GI said fine. Rockwell asked to smear mud on his face and hands. Not a problem.

But when the artist asked to rub dirt on his machine gun, the soldier refused: No proper gunner could tolerate that. So Rockwell portrayed the GI as tattered and begrimed, but with his big gray Browning machine gun sleek and clean.

'American Idol' Premiere: Harry Connick, Jr. Cradles A Contestant Like A Baby

If first impressions are any indication, "American Idol" may have gotten itself back on track. After last season's ill-conceived diva battle overshadowed the competition, "Idol" brought back the much happier Jennifer Lopez to join Keith Urban on the judging panel. But it was the new face that proved the most refreshing. Harry Connick, Jr. may have been unknown to most of the contestants, but he was easily the most enjoyable to watch.

Not only did he give pointed and constructive criticism, he proved he had a quick wit, charm and was up for virtually anything. When 19-year-old Munfarid Zaidi actually indicated he was a huge fan of Connick, Jr., the newest judge declared that if he killed his audition, Connick, Jr. would come cradle him like a baby. Sure it was wacky. But then Munfarid killed his audition, and Connick, Jr. proved himself a man of his word.

"Let’s offer a warm Season 13 welcome to all the future Daughtrys and Fantasias, as well as debuting panelist Harry Connick, Jr., a man so sublime he’s almost managed to dislodge memories of human barnacle Randy Jackson from my brain," wrote TVLine's Michael Slezak of the debut. Buddy TV's John Kubicek was impressed, too, predicting that the newest judge will be the fan favorite by season's end.

"American Idol" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.

'Modern Family': Jane Krakowski Battles Gloria

When Jane Krakowski showed up on "Modern Family" we immediately realized how much we've missed her on our television screens. Channeling a vibe very similar to her role on "30 Rock," Krakowski played Dr. Donna Duncan, a new parent rival for Gloria.

The women battled it out while trying to impress their son's history teacher -- there was only one slot available for a trip to DC, and each mother wanted it for their son for a different reason. But was it the wrong time for her guest appearance? "I wanted to make the journey and cackle at the Type-A mom (as played by JKrak) trying to upstage Gloria," noted The Stir's Rebecca Stokes. "But with everything going [on] with little Alex how could I even begin to appreciate [her]?” Or perhaps it was the perfect balance to the more serious tone of Alex's plot.

After suffering a breakdown at home, Alex promptly sent herself to a therapist. There, she started to discover why she pushes herself so hard. It was a well-performed scene by Ariel Winter, who then shared a meaningful hug when Claire admitted that she doesn't know how her daughter keeps up with such a demanding schedule. There were no quick answers, but it was a well-executed examination of how stress can impact young people. Presumably, Alex isn't done with this storyline just yet.

"Modern Family" continues Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST on ABC.

Kelly Clarkson Gets Rejected On 'Nashville'

Scarlett and Gunnar had a big opportunity walk up and say hello on the latest "Nashville" when Kelly Clarkson guest-starred on the show as herself. She wanted to meet and chat with the pair about writing a few songs for her next record. It's the kind of opportunity so many musicians in Nashville dream of, so how did Scarlett and Gunnar respond?

“Miss Clarkson, I’m thrilled that you want to record our song," Scarlett told her, "I'm so grateful for this opportunity that you've given us to work with you. It's just I thought I could make it work, but I can’t. Gunnar and I are not really in a place where we can write together anymore.”

That's right. For personal reasons, she walked away from a huge opportunity. The Wall Street Journal's Rachelle Thomas was irritated with Scarlett, too, writing, "She is so selfish and self-centered and just aaarrgh. She is with Avery! She broke up with Gunnar!” Over at TVLine, Kimberly Roots had an even more extreme reaction. "[Scarlett] leaves. While someone filthy rich and famous, who wants to share that money and fame with her, looks on in disbelief. ‘It’s complicated,’ Gunnar says with an apologetic smile. ‘It’s idiotic,’ I think and throw my shoe in the general direction of my TV.”

"Nashville" will probably continue to frustrate us, Wednesdays at 10 p.m. EST on ABC.
