A near miss by a speeding car led to the girls getting an invite to party with Prince on "New Girl" -- hey, they needed to set this up somehow! The guys each found their own ways to sneak into the party as well, leading to Prince taking up the unexpected position of relationship guru for Jess and Nick.
The night started off awkwardly when Nick said "I love you" to Jess. It was a surprise to both of them, but Jess didn't say it back. Instead she did finger guns back at him.
Prince gave Jess some good advice, and then took it a few steps further. He trained her through methods that perhaps only make sense to him, including table tennis, pancakes, and locking her in a dark closet. Jess emerged back into the party wearing a dress Prince picked out for her and shouted, "I love you, Nick Miller!"
It was a big moment for the characters, and a huge guest star -- and it got the post-Super Bowl spot -- but TVLine's Kimberly Roots was still unimpressed. "The installment is not 'New Girl‘s' sharpest, though Prince’s willingness to poke fun at his eccentric image is a fun surprise," she wrote. "Still, I didn’t laugh out loud once during the half hour. Throughout, I wondered what 'The Mindy Project' would’ve/could’ve done with such a powerful time slot at its disposal."
"New Girl" airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.
