Rashida Jones On Love: 'I'm Still Pondering, Constantly'

Over the weekend, Glamour editor-in-chief Cindi Leive threw an outdoor party for Rashida Jones at the Beverly Hills home of Trendera founder and Glamour contributor Jane Buckingham (whom Jones said was the "literal inspiration" for the Celeste character in her 2012 film "Celeste & Jesse Forever").

The soiree was in honor of Jones' new relationship column for the magazine, titled "Love, Rashida." Illustrated into a comic strip by artist Josh Cochran, the monthly column, which debuted in March 2014, will feature true stories from the writer/actor's life.

The Huffington Post spoke with Rashida Jones at the edge of the swimming pool to find out just how real this relationship column will be, why she adores being a woman and if she and Aziz Ansari are aligned in their philosophies about love.

HuffPost: How did you decide to make your column for Glamour in the style of a comic strip?
Rashida Jones: I grew up on comics. I love comics. I loved Cathy, Doonesbury, Garfield and the Archie comics. This column is more illustrated, but [Glamour editor-in-chief] Cindi Leive and I were talking, and she is such a great shepherd because she’s incredibly efficient, has no attitude and is all about collaboration.

rashida jones

Was the column your idea?
No. Everything is her idea [laughs]. I said I have all these things I want to talk about, like gender politics, relationships and living in the modern world. And she mentioned the idea of doing it illustrated because we wanted to think of something to make it different. Glamour hasn’t done an illustrated column in 25 years. So that was really appealing to me -- to reinvigorate something that hadn’t been done in a while.

Glamour has said that your column will focus primarily on relationships between men and women. In regards to romantic relationships, what’s one thing you wish you could go back and tell your high school self?
There’s almost nothing you can say because it’s so experiential every stage or relationship that you’re in feels so real and feels like the ultimate and the truth. And then you get to the next stage and it’s the same thing. And you’re like, “Wait!” There’s no substitute for experience.

So I guess I would just say hang in there. Because I think just being alive and continuing to interact with the opposite sex, with your friends, with yourself, all just makes you better. You stop caring about things as much, which is kind of good. You flatten a lot of buttons and you create some new buttons. I’m always on a quest to understand and encapsulate any given moment in my life whether it’s culturally, personally.

So there's kind of no advice I can give, because I’m always striving to understand and define moments in my life. The best you can do is hope you get a column in a magazine to express yourself [laughs] and even then, I’m still pondering, constantly.

Can we expect the column to feature true stories of your dating life?
It’s pretty personal. The way I pitched it to Cindi was: 'I want to write about things I talk about with my friends and my mom.' And the things I’ve written about so far have happened to me.

I know Aziz Ansari is writing a book about modern romance and you guys are close friends. I’m curious, are there certain things you both strongly agree or disagree about?
We talk about it a lot. We both were kind of obsessed with this woman Sherry Turkle -- she’s a professor [at MIT] and she wrote a book called “Alone Together.” She was an early adopter of technology and then kind of turned on it because she realized how much it was standing in the way of intimacy. One of her observations is about how we used to use technology to further an instinct that we have to get in touch with somebody. And now we use it to create a feeling. So you’re home and you’re bored and you send an APB out to the world to see if anyone else is there and if they want to engage with you. And then you have a feeling. Which is so crazy and weird.

Aziz and I are actually in agreement about a lot of things. I think we both are slightly Luddite to the sense that we feel like technology adds a whole new extra-complicated level to relationships -- and it might actually bring us further apart.

Will Aziz make his way into the column?
Maybe yeah! We should do a little crossover. I’ve got to get some guys in there, for sure.

aziz ansari rashida jones
[Pictured: Rashida Jones and Aziz Ansari]

I loved this line from the “Man Hunt” column: “And obviously he has to love me more than he has loved anyone before.” How do you think we can even manage these kinds of expectations when you meet somebody new?
Right. Who is ever going to fill that? I don’t know. My new philosophy for today, because it changes every other day, is that there is so much luck involved. I think if you actually probed women in a very serious candid way, they would tell you that there are two or three things that they could not deal without, and then they would make the rest of it work. Like have to be attracted to the person. Have to feel respected. Have to make me laugh. And then you kind of make everything else work.

Maybe it’s simpler than we think.
I think it is. And I think there’s some magic in it.

Last question. I feel proud to be a woman because _________.
Can I be really honest...? I feel proud to be a woman because I think we are kind of better people, and I know men who feel that way too!

The new TV spot for "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" gives us a small glimpse at the sentient ape army, sporting spears in their sanctuary, and riding horses through the forest while holding assault rifles. As the narrator explains, the scariest part about the apes is that they don't need modern amenities like electricity, but we're going to have to argue that the whole shooting guns thing is pretty terrifying, too. Watch the clip and check out the new movie poster below.

Neil Patrick Harris Looks Very, Very Different In His Latest Broadway Role

We always suspected Neil Patrick Harris would look killer in fishnet tights and stiletto boots, but now we know for sure.

hedwig

The "How I Met Your Mother" actor underwent an extreme makeover for his starring role in the highly anticipated Broadway revival of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch." John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask's cult rock opera tells the tale of a transsexual East German rock star -- we assume you can surmise Harris' role.

Harris strikes a fierce pose on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, donning a blonde wig, jean shorts and glamorous makeup -- heavy on the glitter. "I’ve lost 20 pounds," Harris told EW of his transformation. "I’m in the craziest couture outfits, and I’ve got all this makeup on. But they made me custom heels, so at least those fit well." The sneak peek only makes us all the more antsy to hear the multi-talented Harris belt out "The Origin of Love."

Stay tuned for more updates on "Hedwig," which is set to open April 22 in New York City. To see another enticing glimpse of Harris all dolled up, check out his close-up shot, and visit Entertainment Weekly to read the full interview.

Inspiring Student Goes From Homeless To Carnegie Hall

One Florida college student's musical talents have helped him to make the incredible leap from a homeless student to a performer at New York City's Carnegie Hall.

University of West Florida student James Matthews entered the 2014 American Protege International piano and strings competition, and received an honorable mention along with the prize of a performance at the famed Carnegie Hall, NBC 5 reported. This accomplishment is all the more inspiring considering Matthews' difficulties along the path to success.

Matthews went to Florida Southern College after graduating high school, but he fell on hard times and was homeless for nearly a year and a half, according to Pensacola News Journal. He would sleep in his school's 24 hour piano studio until his teacher helped him.

"He found me sleeping in his studio and pretty much got me out of that situation, found me a different school to go to where I had a dorm and a roof over my head," Matthews told NBC 5.

Now continuing his studies at UWF, Matthews will graduate in 2015 with a bachelor's degree in music, according to Pensacola News Journal.

"I always had my piano, and it's always been my escape," Matthews told the outlet. "I decided if I never gave up it would get me through life, and it has. I don't know where I'd be if it wasn't for music."

James Matthews will be performing in the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York City on April 20.

Elisa Chang's Street Photography Captures Warm Glow Of Waikiki Tourism

Millions of tourists visit Hawaii every year, spending billions of dollars and crowding popular spots like Waikiki. You might think that locals love to hate the transience of tourists -- after all, like tourists everywhere, Waikiki tourists can be loud (aesthetically and audibly), oblivious, and totally unaware of their surroundings. But many Hawaii residents, including Honolulu-based street photographer Elisa Chang, see charm in these visitors. Where else, according to Chang, do you get to see truly happy people on a daily basis?

"In Waikiki," she says, "people are on vacation and, therefore, unguarded."

Chang takes portraits of Waikiki tourists with the goal of capturing the essence of these characters without making fun of them. Her Instagram feed is full of photos that are funny, warm and endearing. While orange-tanned women in bikinis lounge next to chronic selfie-takers and adults in floaties, the overall feel of her photography is positive and human rather than snarky and judgmental.

Chang says Waikiki gives her “endless variety." "It's funny," she noted. "In certain areas I feel like I see recurring characters. In one place, I regularly see little Japanese boys in goggles. In another spot, it's redheads. Other places, it's always girls taking selfies.”

Chang walks around Waikiki after finishing up her day job as a hairstylist. She only takes photos if she genuinely likes or admires something about a person. “That way, I can’t feel badly if I’m ever busted. I guess I look for something that’s weird and wonderful and very human.”

In This Naughty Candyland, Things Aren't As Sweet As They Seem (NSFW)

Imagine a place rife with layered cakes, pastel-hued fondant, cotton candy tufts and cherries-on-top, where scantily clad women -- including Katy Perry -- dance upon whipped cream clouds. This is the heavenly sphere of hyperrealist painter Will Cotton, and it's not safe for children.

will cotton
Beyond the Pleasure Principle, 2014

Cotton's painted world resembles a naughty Candyland, where your sexual desires and your sweet tooth can be satisfied in one fell swoop. The over-indulgent works, which teeter on the edge of bad taste, are equal parts Jean-Honoré Fragonard, porn-era Jeff Koons and Willy Wonka.

"Sweetness taken to an extreme degree, as it is in my paintings, becomes cloying, even repulsive, and that’s where it gets interesting for me," Cotton says in his statement. Indeed, look long enough at Cotton's milky white dreamscapes and it feels a bit like you've overdone it on the baked goods. His garden of heavenly delights ends up tasting sour as the search for pure indulgence goes awry. This incessant pleasure-seeking, Cotton argues, is the human condition.

Cotton begins his process by building maquettes of the delectable scenarios in his New York studio. From sugary sweet still-lifes to life-sized displays of models dressed in lollipop crowns and not much else, Cotton creates sets to fully capture the texture and detail of his subject matter. Thus his fantastical depictions are shockingly realistic, even if they're of a world-famous pop star riding on a cloud.

While Cotton's paintings aim to critique pure, unadulterated pleasures, many argue his portrayal of nudes fails to do anything but revel in their conventional beauty. As Leah Ollman wrote in the L.A. Times, "Commercially slick and sociologically naive, it doesn’t critique indulgence or excess, it merely capitalizes on them." Whether Cotton's works effectively subvert the sweet life or invite viewers to swim in it remains a subject of debate.

See Cotton's visual sugar rush and some behind-the-scenes studio shots below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Will Cotton will have his first UK solo exhibition at Ronchini Gallery from June 25 until August 9, 2014.

The Beauty Of Art History's Masterpieces Lies In One Math Problem

"This is not art," designers Hadi Alaeddin and Mothanna Hussein write of their series dubbed, not surprisingly, "NOT ART."

The Jordan-based designers, who go by the collective name Warsheh, strip art history's greatest hits down to their leading characters, splicing up the remaining imagery based on the Golden Ratio. For anyone who needs a refresher, the golden ratio (also known as the divine proportion) is a number that can be found when a line or shape is divided into two parts so that the longer part divided by the smaller part is also equal to the whole length or shape divided by the longer part. Still with us?

girl

"We know nothing about these paintings, we even used google image search to look up the names," the designers continue. It's this utterly non-pretentious attitude that makes Alaeddin and Mothanna's endeavor so refreshing and endearing. Not to mention the fact that, removed from their backgrounds and entwined in the geometry that enabled their creation, the best of Jacques-Louis David, Johannes Vermeer and company gain a hypnotic, contemporary appeal.

If you're looking for some profound message behind the stunning series, don't get your hopes up. "We're proud of being designers and not artists, the main difference being that we will sometimes happily admit that we worked on something just for the heck of it and not to claim any deeper meanings and hidden philosophies," they say. "Sometimes we do make posters just because they look cool. And sometimes those posters, the way we imagine them, are liked by so many people, people that we are very much grateful are actually out there."

Looking Back At 'The Matrix' Fifteen Years Later

$

0
Fifteen years ago, the Wachowski brothers unveiled their science-fiction classic "The Matrix." From the groundbreaking special effects behind bullet-time to the mixing, matching and surface-scratching of every philosophy one can pull from a 101 textbook to the techno music hacking and of course, the leather, "The Matrix" was built on a potpourri of elements. To look back, we compiled a few of the folks who could speak best to a few aspects of the film.

The Special-Effects; Or, How Bullet-Time Took 18 Months To Create In 1999 But Would Only Take 6 Weeks Now
When it happened in 1999, everyone’s mind was blown. The question was simply how did they do that?

“It all started with the Wachowskis at the beginning,” Kim Libreri, the film's technical supervisor, said in the video above. “We had comic book storyboards from day one, even before we worked out how we would do it.”

Libreri went to on to discuss the now famous method they “settled on” of using “lots and lots of cameras" (122 to be exact) which were set up in 360 degrees around the actor in front of a green screen and were shot in slow motion which required “clever ways of controlling the cameras with computers.”

In Libreri’s words, the method was "the first usage of techniques that would allow us to make synthetic environments solely from shooting photographs,” thereby allowing them to have a three-dimensional environment without having to have motion-film in the actual location of the scene. (Instead, “20 or so” photos were used to digitally create the environment in post-production.)

When asked how long it took to create the now-famous scene Libreri said, “That shot was in the pipe for about a year and a half.” How long would it take today? “I would say from beginning to end, we could probably put one together in about six weeks nowadays.”

The Philosophy Behind The Film; Or, The Philosophy The Wachowskis Admittedly Got Wrong

From the 15-year-old stoner to the philosophy professor looking to engage his bored students, "The Matrix" opened minds.

“The film is definitely inspired by Descartes ‘Dream Problem’ and Nozick’s ‘Experience Machine Problem,’ where the question is, ‘How can we know for sure that we’re not actually dreaming right now?'" said David Kyle Johnson, author of "Introducing Philosophy Through Pop-Culture.”

When asked about the nature of political slavery and free will within the film, Johnson referenced the philosopher Jean Baudrillard, who, according to Johnson, rejected being hired as a consultant on the film . Upon the movie's release, the Wachowskis admitted that they got his philosophy incorrect.

“One of the things that he [Baudrillard] argues is that, in a certain kind of way, we are not living in reality, and there’s a couple of ways of understanding that,“ Johnson said. “One way to think about real and not real is: is it human made? In that kind of light you might also think about a kind of non-reality that is imposed upon you by media, politicians, government, the outside world.”

Johnson compared the idea to the way biased television can influence one's take on current events.

"Think about the kind of reality that someone that might live in if they spend too much time watching their favorite cable news television show that sells them a certain kind of reality, the kind of reality that they want to believe in. In a certain way they are living in a kind of non-reality." he said.

So, Fox News is basically our Matrix these days.

The First Major Comic Book Trilogy After 'Star Wars'

Prior to "The Matrix," Hollywood had "Star Wars," the Superman and Batman films and few other significant geek franchises. Following "The Matrix," however, there was the X-Men series, “Iron Man,” “Marvel's The Avengers” and well, essentially all of the comic book movies that come out every weekend now.

How did “The Matrix” reignite the comic book film? It gave special powers and effects to seemingly normal people. It breathed life into the narrative of an average person who discovers they can do something abnormal and possibly save the human race with it. Not only did the film reinvigorate that narrative but it also spawned a number of special-effects wannabes such as the bullet time in Angelina Jolie’s “Wanted” or the globe-trotting space-time-continuum breaking of Doug Liman’s “Jumper.” The major difference between all of these films, no matter what their financial success was none featured nearly as many “geek” elements as "The Matrix.”

From philosophy to gaming to anime and kung-fu, “The Matrix” wore its geek flag proudly and has now spawned at least 15 years of the geeks holding power at the box office and thereby holding the power in Hollywood. See the full HuffPost Live conversation below.

Cyber Stalking Prank Freaks People Out By Revealing Their Personal Information Online

Forget being a psychic, all you need is an Instagram account.

This week, YouTube celebrity Jack Vale tracked people down by searching social media posts, and then pretended to use some otherworldly powers to guess things about them.

Just by creeping on their Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, Vale "guessed" the names of dogs, what town they were from or even whether they were good at parking or not.

While both hilarious and clever, the prank also shed some light on how much information people really put online about themselves. It's just the kind of joke that will make you want to go delete all your social media accounts.

Of course, that'd be right after you post an update about why you are deleting them.

Kate Upton co-stars in "The Other Woman," but it's her bikini that takes the focus in this clip from the Fox film. Yahoo! released a new teaser for the comedy on Tuesday, highlighting the moment when the characters played by Leslie Mann and Cameron Diaz realize that Mann's husband (and Diaz's boyfriend) is also dating Upton's character. (Needless to say, the movie is about the trio teaming up for revenge against the philanderer.) Upton is great and all, but we'll be over here laughing at Mann saying, "I'm strong when I'm mad!" from now until April 25, when "The Other Woman" is out in theaters.

Twenty years ago today, Tia and Tamera Mowry burst onto our screens with their unforgettably kooky hats and their madcap twin-based hijinks, and changed the course of world history with "Sister, Sister."

In between marveling at how old we've gotten and arguing about whether we were a Tia or a Tamera, we found ourselves inexorably drawn back to one of the most unforgettable parts of this unforgettable show: its intro. Or, should we say, intros, since the opening to "Sister, Sister" changed as often as the seasons. Turning to YouTube, we found ourselves lost in a sea of theme songs and got to thinking: Which one is really the best?

With New Album, The Pixies Say The Best Is Yet To Come

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — They inspired generations of musicians worldwide, served as the blueprint for countless rock bands, including Nirvana, and got a second life as reunited alternative rock idols. Now, the Pixies say they're forging ahead while still looking for a new sound.

The Boston quartet released their debut, the EP "Come on Pilgrim," in 1987. Their college-radio hits include "Monkey Gone to Heaven," ''Here Comes Your Man" and "Where is My Mind." They disbanded in the early 1990s and reunited in 2004. Since then the band had released only one song, "Bam Thwok," in 2004.

But that changed in June, when a video for a new single, "Bagboy," showed up online unannounced. A few weeks later, the band surprised fans again with an online collection of four new songs released under the name "EP-1" and the announcement of a global tour.

Have they found the Pixies sound they want? "Not yet. That's still to come," lead singer Charles Thompson, who goes by the name Black Francis, told The Associated Press behind the scenes at the Lollapalooza rock festival in Chile.

"Rome was not built in a day. I think we need a little more time to really create something that's absolutely different but we're in the process. With this record, we're moving in that direction."

The Pixies hired Argentine bassist Paz Lechantin in December after Kim Shattuck was fired from the position after less than five months on the job. She had replaced beloved long-time bassist Kim Deal who quit the Pixies in June after more than 25 years with the band.

"I like the new gal, she's smart, funny, plays really good bass, she surfs, she sings great, she's bilingual," Thompson said.

"And she makes us laugh," guitarist Joey Santiago chimed in. "She feels like home, she was meant to be with us."

Drummer David Lovering said she's also pushing him to continue learning: "She is making me play better. She is a great bass player, and I don't want to embarrass myself."

Thompson said the band plans to tour more, and he especially hopes to visit Paraguay because he admires Agustin Barrios, the late Paraguayan classical guitarist and composer.

But for now, "The Pixies is the future," Santiago said. "I just see us. We're going to record more albums, tour more."

'The Drop' Trailer: James Gandolfini's Final Film Role Revealed

Formerly titled "Animal Rescue," Michaël R. Roskam's "The Drop" marks the final screen appearance by James Gandolfini. The late star plays a shady bartender in the crime thriller (written by Mr. Crime Thriller, Dennis Lehane), which features Tom Hardy in a leading role as Gandolfini's onscreen nephew. "The Drop" looks violent and seedy -- as if "Killing Them Softly," another Gandolfini movie, had a baby with "The Town." Fox Searchlight is set to release "The Drop" on Sept. 19. The film's official summary and trailer are below.

THE DROP is a new crime drama from Michaël R. Roskam, the Academy Award-nominated director of BULLHEAD. Based on a screenplay from Dennis Lehane (MYSTIC RIVER, GONE BABY GONE), THE DROP follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) through a covert scheme of funneling cash to local gangsters - "money drops" - in the underworld of Brooklyn bars. Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv (James Gandolfini), Bob finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood's past where friends, families, and foes all work together to make a living - no matter the cost.

The Flaming Lips just weren't ready for what Fred Armisen had to offer.

Then again, when the "Portlandia" star tried to replace Wayne Coyne as lead singer of the band, he did suggest that "Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots" would sound better as a Bossa Nova, Rockabilly or even a Two-Tone Ska song.

And while Jon Daly clearly digs it, the rest of the guys couldn't really handle Armisen's off-beat musical prowess.

Brides Against Breast Cancer (BABC), an organization which offers programs and services to cancer patients, is on its annual nationwide "Tour of Gowns," according the organization's website.

Volunteers go through donated wedding gowns at BABC's headquarters in Sarasota, Fla., and then take the dresses to bridal expos in about 120 cities each year, Fox 29 News reported. For the past 16 years, BABC has been spreading breast cancer awareness, and selling discounted designer wedding dresses to brides, with 80 percent of proceeds going toward providing free services for families affected by breast cancer, according to Fox 29 News.

"Everyone you meet has been touched by cancer ... they all have a story to share," Karen DeRitter, the BABC boutique manager, told the outlet. "I'm very blessed to hear those stories and share it with them and then to share one of the most important days with them."

BABC brings 750 to 1,000 designer wedding gowns to cites across the country, and sells them for 25 percent to 85 percent off the retail value, WPVI reported.

"They have great options and tons of different sizes and designers," Maygan Henzie, a bride who attended an event in New Jersey, told the outlet. "It's really a great opportunity and it goes to a great cause."

"Tour of Gowns" will make it possible for Brides Against Breast Cancer to donate $2 million dollars to help cancer victims, according to its website.

If you want to get involved, you can donate your gown here, or see the list of upcoming "Tour of Gowns" cities here.

Historians Claim Holy Grail Sits In Spanish Museum

Jesus Christ!

Two historians claim they've identified the holy grail that Jesus drank from at the last supper, according to AFP.

León University medieval history lecturer Margarita Torres and art historian José Manuel Ortega del Rio make the claim in their book "Kings of the Grail," published last week.

Crowds flocked to see the goblet of the Infanta Doña Urraca in the Basilica of San Isidoro in León, northern Spain once the historians' claim came to light.

The Australian explains the historians' case.

In 2011, two medieval Egyptian parchments were discovered that mentioned the chalice of Christ, saying it was taken from Jerusalem to Cairo. From there, records show that an emir in Muslim Spain received it as a reward for helping the Egyptians during a famine. Finally, it arrived in Christendom in the 11th century after being presented to King Fernando as a gift.

The researchers' investigation "led them to identify the upper part of [the Doña Urraca] goblet, made of agate and missing a fragment as described in the parchments, as the grail," according to the Guardian.

But — and this is a big but — the historians admit that the goblet's first 400 years of history are unknown, New York Post reports.

That hasn't stopped hoards of people from visiting the potentially sacred cup.

Empire Of The Sun Discusses 'Dumb And Dumber To' Soundtrack, 'Caffeine And Prayer'

Australian electronic duo Empire of the Sun said in an interview last year that they had a "treatment" written for a film for their most recent album, "Ice on the Dune," and were just "waiting for that person with a sackful of money to come along and pay for it." While that money-sacked paladin has yet to appear, just five days after the 2013 article came out, the Farrelly brothers tweeted that the band, comprised of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, would be record the soundtrack for "Dumb and Dumber To."

A curious combination that promises one the catchiest soundtracks to what could be the most quotable movie of 2014, the band is now in full swing, writing away to the stupid antics of Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne.

“We’re a couple months into it, so we’ve got a good bit of content," Steele, Empire of the Sun vocalist, guitarist and all-around songwriter, told The Huffington Post. "It’s like we’re sculptors chiseling into the film. You’re taking off the fat, and just sort of exploring with your guitar. Eventually you have to build a house somewhere.”

As Steele noted, the band recently had the opportunity to spend some time with Jim Carrey and the rest of the cast (funny enough, being a star himself, Steele said he found himself short of words in Carrey's presence). It wasn't the A-list Hollywood talent, however, that spurred Empire of the Sun to accept the Farrelly brothers' offer to make a move into the movie business. Rather, as Steele said, it was that "film is the most powerful medium."

"It's really the jackpot," he said. "We both pump out a lot of different music that land on different platforms and different areas of color. It doesn’t always work for a record. A record has to follow a kind of thread; has to be in the same family. I’ve just got hundreds of ideas for songs and just want to bring them to life.”

Steele explained the importance the soundtrack holds in film, adding a layer that is rarely recognized for its importance outside of musical films. “The music lubricates the whole scene," Steele said. "It’s like when you go out on a first date, you wish could put some chords behind it. The music would really help."

In describing the difference between approaching this soundtrack as opposed to writing a studio album, Steele said how it is not about writing down what is on his mind, but being able to interpret a character's mind and their surrounding environment. Excited by this challenge, the band is taking things one step at a time, waiting to see the outcome and its reception before deciding to continue their involvement in scoring film. Thinking about how the film will undoubtedly be riddled with outrageously idiotic jokes, I asked, quite stupidly, whether this required them to "write funny."

"I’ve actually got a big pair of shoes in the studio," Steele joked. "There’s a real giant mouse on the computer and a red nose in place of the Apple sign."

While the band has no plans, as of now, to unveil any b-sides or other new content in the near future, they plan to release a few more singles in their push of "Ice on the Dune." Discussing the expectation of bands to constantly push out music, Steele said record companies have conceived this perfect evolution where they get handed a single and album whenever they want it, churning pop bands into products. Empire of the Sun does not fit into this matrix.

“I think Empire is the most unconventional, unpredictable, sort of focused slash unfocused band in the world," Steele said. "Everything kind of works in this Wonka-like paradox time frame. It’s funny, such a strange collection of minds where the one has to have a heartbeat at 122 while the other is slightly sad. It’s like it’s sunny in California and raining in New York, and it will work. It takes a mashup of different ingredients. Which is hard sometimes because sometimes you want to plan. The last record took a lot longer than we wanted it to. Like, we handed in our record two years late. We’re the band that a record company loves to hate.”

The band also has a slew of forthcoming shows on the docket, including a performance at the Bud Light Hotel Dallas and festivals like Coachella. "We just booked some shows in Korea, and some more around Asia," Steele said. "Just getting all around the world. And we’ve got lots of American shows. We always dreamed of coming here as kids. Australia always just seemed so far away from everything."

Asked how it is possible for them to keep on top of such a busy schedule, Steele said with a chuckle: "You know, I will have four coffees, three red bulls and a cold shower, and I’m stalling falling asleep on the couch. Caffeine and prayer. There’s an album title right there."

Today in totally expected news, Miley Cyrus is topless again.

Back in February, the 21-year-old pop star released the cover art for the remix of "Adore You," which featured a close-up shot of Cyrus in a black wig, showing just enough skin to signal she wasn't wearing any clothes. Well, the full photo that was used for the cover has leaked and was posted by Idolator, and -- lo and behold -- there is Cyrus wearing nothing but white undies, straddling a white horse and holding a blunt. We think it encapsulates her entire persona to a tee.

Of course, Cyrus has now posed topless so many times it would be more surprising if she actually wore a shirt during a photo shoot.
