'Game Of Thrones' Fan Turns Wheelchair Into Iron Throne For Cosplay

0
0
And the award for most awesome "Game of Thrones" cosplay of the day goes to ...

Mica Bethea, A.K.A. the guy who helped Tyrion Lannister take the Iron Throne.

While attending MegaCon 2014 in Orlando, Bethea took his cosplay to the next level of epic fandom by outfitting his wheelchair as the Iron Throne. By hiding his lower legs beneath a panel and attaching a pair of boots to his knees, he artificially shortened his legs. A leather jacket and hand-of-the-king pin complete the Tyrion Lannister look. "Star Trek: The Next Generation" actor Wil Wheaton was so taken with the getup that he tweeted a photo of it.

Top notch cosplay, sir. We raise our goblets to you.

This Huge Wave Of Barbies Will Crash Into Your Imagination

Barbie's hitting the beach again, but not in the way you might think.

Artist Annette Thas has built a nearly 10-foot-tall wave out of thousands of used Barbies. The installation became a talker this month at the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition in Cottesloe Beach in Australia.

In the interview above, Thas calls her work a "wave of memory." Inspiration sparked when the Perth-based artist returned to her native Belgium to visit her sick sister. She said memories of childhood came flooding back.

"A lot of emotions were overwhelming me, and I wanted to translate that into an artwork that was quite universal, what people could understand," she says in the clip.

Thas told the West Australian that it took seven weeks to tie the dolls into the frame. But apparently her labor paid off: She pocketed $2,500 for winning the people's choice award and $2,000 for the kids' choice award.

Barbie, who turned 55 this year amid continued debate over her unrealistic proportions, has generated plenty of artwork throughout the years. The pieces range from the subversive to a tweaked knockoff that recently spawned a fundraising effort for a "normal" Barbie.

Japanese Girl Shreds Guitar, Gender Stereotypes, With Face-Melting Metal Solo

Just because she's nearly the same size as her instrument doesn't mean this Japanese girl's metal solo won't melt your face clean off.

Known on YouTube only as Li-sa-x, the 8-year-old shared this video last December in which she covers "Scarified" by Racer X. Despite her diminutive stature, she totally shreds.

On her Facebook page, Li-sa-x says her musical influences are Guthrie Govan and Paul Gilbert, both highly accomplished electric guitarists.

What's a gender stereotype, again?

Catherine Keener On 'Maladies' And The 'Thelma & Louise' Scene You Didn't See Her In

0

Catherine Keener's latest movie, the low-budget indie "Maladies," is offbeat, even if she doesn't see it as such. Directed by New York-based visual artist Carter, "Maladies" is the story of a former soap-opera actor (James Franco) whose state of madness deepens while living with his eccentric sister (Fallon Goodson) and their longtime, cross-dressing friend (Keener). It's set in 1960s New York, even though the characters are at one point seen watching 1970s news footage of Jim Jones' Peoples Temple.

"Honestly, when I had questions about the time, I think there were things that [Carter] just didn't sweat," Keener said when HuffPost Entertainment inquired about about the time lapses. "I don't think it was as ponderous. [...] He’s an artist, another kind of artist, and so you can't really apply the same parameters to him as I would to somebody who’s just -- I mean, not just -- a filmmaker. It’s a different canvas."

Keener has a penchant for oddball scripts. From "Being John Malkovich" to "Synecdoche, New York" (both of which were written by Charlie Kaufman, who is also behind an FX pilot that could become a series co-starring Keener, Sally Hawkins, John Hawkes and Michael Cera), she is nothing if not a choosey actress. Unless the part chooses her, as in the case of "Thelma & Louise."

The actress read at an audition opposite a friend who was seeking a role in the 1991 drama. It was done purely as a favor. "And then [director Ridley Scott] stopped [my friend] and gave me a part in it," she said. "It was fun. I had one scene, and it was Harvey Keitel's wife in bed with him."

Before the release of "Thelma & Louise," Keener shot "Johnny Suede," her first role that didn't find her playing a character credited as something like Cocktail Waitress (1986's "About Last Night...") or Steve's Secretary (1991's "Switch"). "Suede" co-starred Brad Pitt, whom she hadn't met on the set of "Thelma & Louise."

"He hadn't yet blown up," Keener recalled of Pitt. "So we became friends when we shot 'Johnny Suede.' I loved doing 'Thelma & Louise.' It came out of nowhere."

Don't go on a mad YouTube hunt for Keener's scene, though. It was deleted from the final cut and, to the actress' knowledge, has not resurfaced among any special features.

"I've never seen it," she said. "I have no idea, but I should find out. I love that movie so much, and it was so great to be included in it."

She's come a long way (including two Oscar nominations) since almost being featured in the Ridley Scott classic, and her road has only become more eclectic.

"It just seems possible to me because movies are like that anyway -- the stories are outrageous or they're totally made up, even if they're supposed to be true," Keener said of the zaniness seen in "Maladies" and her other, more whimsical films. "So I just go into whatever that reality is that somebody feels."

"Maladies" is currently in limited release and available via on-demand services.

Ray LaMontagne Releases First Music Video Ever For 'Supernova' [EXCLUSIVE]

0

HuffPost Entertainment is proud to present the exclusive debut of Ray LaMontagne's new music video for his recent single, "Supernova," off the upcoming album by the same title. To make it even more special, this is LaMontagne's very first music video ever. This is what LaMontagne had to say in regards to this rare moment:

I first came across Lucy Dyson's work through the video for Gemma Ray's lovely song 'Rescue Me.' I was hooked immediately. Genius. I was instantly taken with her Terry Gilliam-esque use of layered, ragged cut-out images. To me that was the anchor. A familiar place for my imagination to leap from. But very quickly you realize that the narrative is taking you somewhere that you didn't expect. It feels like you're on a roller coaster in some weird circus of the psychedelic burlesque. And yet, underneath all that strange and beautiful imagery there's this sense that she is truly emotionally invested in the storytelling. To me, it's like she can see within a song some hidden fourth dimension, a dimension that you didn't even know existed until she pulls aside the curtain and invites you in.

After watching the video, there's no doubting LaMontagne's choice in Dyson. A technicolor palette of '70s bliss, Dyson's animation takes the viewer on a galactic love cruise through time filled with go-go boots, gravity-defying motorcycles and planets with killer shades. Mesmerizing in every way possible, Dyson occasionally pans out to the theater showing this lover's voyage, as if to remind the audience that they are simply spectators to the character's life. Or is she saying that this is nothing more than a dream, and that the real spectator is the character?

Watch the spectacular video above, and check out the album cover and tracklist for LaMontagne's fifth album, due out on May 6 via RCA Records, which can preordered here.

Michael Jackson's 'The Way You Make Me Feel' Video Without Music Is Somehow Hilarious

Michael Jackson's music videos are entertaining enough on their own, but they reach another level when you get rid of all the music.

The Musicless Music Video for "The Way You Make Me Feel" above has all the dancing, "woo-hoos" and sound effects of the original (okay, maybe a few more sound effects) but absolutely no singing.

It's surprisingly funny. Check out more of the same videos here.

This Documentary About The National Isn't Even About The National

0

Tom Berninger didn't set out to make a feature-length movie about his brother Matt's band, The National, nor did he set out to make a movie about depression and feeling overshadowed by that same brother's success. But when "Mistaken For Strangers" debuted as the opening film at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2013, critics and The National fans saw much more than a rock doc about an indie band on tour. Instead, they found a raw portrayal of self-doubt, a movie about the struggle to make a movie and what it's like to watch your brother's booming prosperity from the literal sidelines.

"When I first set out to do this thing, it was really just video content for the website," Tom Berninger told HuffPost Entertainment. "Matt gave me a job to go on tour to get me out of Cincinnati to revitalize my film reel. But over time, I got in trouble. I was filming when I was drunk. I messed things up." Tom, 34, is nine years younger than Matt and had been living in their parents' house before Matt asked him to be a roadie on the band's European tour. Tom brought along a camera to catalog the experience, which he did ... until he was fired.

When he returned home, Tom had over 200 hours of footage: Matt knocking over a clothing rack in rage, Tom missing the tour bus, revealing conversations with band members about Matt's temper. "If the intention was to have a movie, which it actually never was, I don’t think people would have been as comfortable as we were with Tom in certain situations filming everything," Matt said. "We just thought Tom was making a tour diary that no one would ever see this stuff."

But what resulted, after rounds and rounds of editing was an honest portrayal of human struggle, much more than an extended tour diary. "It feels like more of an appropriate film about our band than any other journalistic profile would have been," Matt said. "I think that it's scrappy, flawed and full of things that are not just about a band on tour, it’s about things that are much more interesting to me than that. He ended up using almost everything we told him not to. "

"Mistaken For Strangers" begins as a man's attempt to connect with this cool, older brother, to go crazy on tour and work along the way. But when Tom hears from Matt, "The only reason you are here is because you're my brother," the film becomes a meta version of what Tom had been living for years. "I wouldn’t have made this movie if I knew how much stuff I would reveal in my own movie. I would’ve said no," he said. "I was lost about who I was and who I thought I should have been. Not just underneath Matt, my brother, but how would I express myself. Where am I in this world? There are a lot of people out there just like me. I hoped this movie would give them a sense that you don’t know where to find yourself."

After the tour, Tom moved in with Matt, Matt's wife and the couple's daughter in Brooklyn to finish the movie. In one scene, Matt films Tom sitting in the back seat of an SUV. Tom describes what he eats (pizza and Chinese food), his depression ("I don't own dishes") and what it's like to try to turn a wall full of Post-It notes into a movie about yourself.

"The way he describes it is they made a movie out of the stuff that other documentaries might leave on the cutting room floor," Matt said. "That was the stuff that was always interesting to him. Not so much the really good answer to the really good question, more the awkward space in between the questions where you get to see people being people."

The Tom sitting in an office in Manhattan's SoHo neighborhood is different from the Tom on film, more confident and energized by the success. He's no longer the guy from The National's little brother. He's a filmmaker, one who called Robert DeNiro by his first name when they met at Tribeca's opening night last spring, responsible for a scary, honest look at brotherhood and music. "Two nights before it premiered I was eating ramen noodles and diet Mountain Dew and crossing my fingers I made a good movie."

"Mistaken For Strangers" is out in limited release and via on-demand services and iTunes on March 28.

It was not immediately clear how long the museum would be evacuated.

Anchovies aren't just bait or a pungent pizza topping.

For all the magic in the world above sea level, there is just as much hidden in the depths of the ocean. And these small fish are a big part of that magic.

In collaboration with IMAX, the MacGillivray Freeman underwater film crew captured anchovies swirling, whirling, flipping and flashing colors in this incredible clip from "Journey To The South Pacific" that could only be described as "underwater fireworks."

This scene is one of many that offer a fascinating and beautiful look into the ocean.

Actor Kristian Nairn Says There's More To Hodor Than Meets The Eye

0
0
Wouldn't you know, there's way more to Hodor than his iconic one-word tagline, "Hodor."

He may play the most silent character on HBO's "Game of Thrones," but actor Kristian Nairn is quite the opposite. He's eloquent, thoughtful and really quite hip. The tattooed actor and DJ sat down with HuffPost TV after hosting an onstage Q&A session at Brooklyn's "Game of Thrones" Epic Fan Experience on March 20.

Nairn has plenty of thoughts about his generally reticent character and he's adamant that there's more to Hodor than meets the eye. Here are some of the highlights from our chat.

Do you think Hodor’s aware of the journey he’s going on with Bran?
Oh yes, and by the end of Season 4, he’s definitely aware of it. You’ll see a change in him. We’re all very tired. It’s very arduous and, toward the end, you can see that it’s taken a toll on everybody.

Do you think that Hodor understands the mystical element of what’s going on?
Yes, and I think he’s terrified of the magical element. It’s foolish to have someone in your head, against your will, but he loves Bran and I don’t think he would ever leave him. There’s so much backstory to Hodor and George has left so much of it a mystery. I can’t wait to learn what his backstory is.

Is Bran Hodor's ultimate motivation, then?
I think there’s something else ... but I think that Bran’s all he’s got; it’s the only thing that reminds him of home, safety and security.

And on a tangentially related note, as a DJ, what song would you say best represents the journey that they’re going on?
“Road to Nowhere” by the Talking Heads.

How would you describe season 4 in just one phrase.
High-octane.

Tune into the Season 4 premiere of "Game of Thrones" on April 6.

'Loyal Customer' Gets McDonald's Receipt Tattooed On Arm

Let's hope he's lovin' it.

An 18-year-old from Norway now has a McDonald's receipt tattooed on his right arm. Stian Ytterdahl of Lorenskog, said that his friends wanted to punish him for being "too active with the ladies," according to Scallywag and Vagabond's translation of Romereskes Blad.

It's entirely unclear what that means, but his friends gave him the option of getting a Barbie tattooed on his butt or his fast food purchase on his arm.

Sabelink Tattoo of Lillestrom posted a photo yesterday of Ytterdahl's decision:

"Now I'm a living billboard," he told Romereskes Blad, according to Gawker. "But I think all this is just fun. Maybe it won't be as fun when I'm 50 or 60 years old, but it's my choice."

The tattoo, which takes up most of his arm, shows a recent purchase that included a soda, cheeseburger and "nonstop Flurry."

A spokeswoman from McDonald's Norway has stated that the teen is "obviously" a "loyal customer."

The tattoo parlor also offered to ink the receipt they gave Ytterdahl for the first tattoo on his left arm for free, and he's agreed, according to the Irish Mirror.

Before The Beat Drops: Raury Is Following 'God's Whisper'

Before The Beat Drops is an artist introduction series dedicated to bringing you the rising acts before they make their break. Our unlimited access to music of all kinds is both amazing and overwhelming, and so we want to help keep your playlists fresh by doing the leg work for you and discovering your next favorite artist.

before the beat drops

"I am the savior."

A claim too bold for many coming from culture's "nucleus," coming from the mouth of some 17-year-old kid from Atlanta, the proclamation just seems treasonous. But this isn't some narcissistic self-appointed ascension, this is a call to a generation to follow the one voice that truly matters: their own. This is what he calls God's whisper.

Raury, the dude with the "Amish swag," or at least what his hat brings to mind, began writing music at the age of 3, before he even realized what it was he was doing. He picked up a guitar at the age of 11, and proceeded to teach himself every chord, playing untuned for the entire first year. At 15, he began writing and producing his debut album, "Indigo Child," balancing schooldays with endless nights in the studio. And then he rewrote it and rewrote it and rewrote it.

"It happened three different times over a span of two years where we make 10 songs and then I would make one song that was better than all of the 10 songs, and so I'd be like 'Hold on, we've got to start all over,'" Raury says. "Man, I thought everyone was going to kill me, but I really never had to worry about that with them. One thing that I love about my management is that they never rushed me. They gave me all the time that I needed. They don’t tell me what to create, or how to go about making what I make. They just let me sit in my bubble and do what I do."

Never one to settle into one style of music, Raury's influences include Phil Collins, Kid Cudi, Bon Iver, Kanye West, Andre 3000, Manchester Orchestra, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Michael Jackson, and Coldplay. The resulting sound is somewhat ineffable, and that's exactly what he wants. Raury refuses to be shouldered into a genre. Don't call him a singer. Don't call him a rapper. He's just Raury. Definitions will only subject him to another's reality, and "Indigo Child" is about the exact opposite.

"I just want to make as many people aware that the world is yours," he says. "The world is really yours. People come down on my generation so often, and I know that's probably how it works with each generation before it, but I just want to prove them wrong."

"There's so much information, and sometimes people come across the wrong information and travel down the wrong wells, and then sometimes we find the right information. That's why at the end of 'God's Whisper' you see some kids pop the molly and snort the coke. That's me not hiding the fact that this is good and bad. It's not a fucking fairy tale story, some 'Oh, we're going to save the world!' thing. We find out about these things when we're younger, and it can create us or it can destroy us, so we've got to be aware of it all."

Thanks to the creative minds on Raury's team at Love Renaissance, Raury is embarking on his first journey around the country on what they are calling the "Anti Tour." Sitting in the 10-foot bed of a truck covered in his decals from late March until early May, Raury will be pulling up to various shows and playing his music to all who will listen.

"When legendary artists -- Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Kanye, Beyonce -- reach the apex of their careers, it's very satisfying to say you were there listening from the start," Raury said. "So look at me now, and just think about the future."

Disney Characters Get Zombie-Hunter Makeover, Become The Walking Disney

People don't generally think of Disney characters as particularly scary (unless you're talking about villains like Ursula or Maleficent, anyway). There's certainly nothing frightening about Disney's princesses and princes, right?

Think again -- things are getting post-apocalyptic. DeviantART user Kasami-Sensei has re-envisioned the sweet and innocent protagonists of several Disney films in the style of zombie hunters (and a zombie) from AMC's "The Walking Dead."

We knew that these Disney princesses and princes were cool and tough, but now they really kick-butt. Check out several of Kasami-Sensei's illustrations below and head over to his DeviantART page for even more. Some of these illustrations are even accompanied by fan-fiction stories on Kasami-Sensei's page.
