'Sherlock' Season Finale: Holmes Kills A Man In Cold Blood

$

Wrapping its latest quick season, "Sherlock" ended with a moment we never expected to see. With no other legal recourse available to him in order to protect John and Mary, Sherlock shot Magnussen in cold blood. "I’m not a hero. I’m a high-functioning sociopath," he said as an explanation for his choice.

Mary's secret past as a covert operative was uncovered in this installment, and her attempts at having a new life separate from that were endangered by Magnussen, who used information to blackmail people of all kinds. He was a shark preying on everyone, and so Sherlock put him down with no remorse.

For his trouble, he was exiled from England -- for about four minutes. It was supposed to be longer, but the episode ended with a startling return. Despite shooting himself last season, it would appear that Moriarty has returned. At the very least, his image took over every screen in England. And so, Sherlock Holmes and John Watson are needed again, though we've no idea when they'll pick up the case.

"Sherlock" will be back for a fourth season, but there is no indication when it might happen. Thus far, the show has been running one-and-a-half to two years between seasons.

The One Glaring Fault Of The Seinfeld Super Bowl Reunion

The AMC Pacer is the George Costanza of cars if we’re to believe the Super Bowl special of "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" that brought George, Jerry and Newman back together for the big game.

Though both Costanza and the Pacer are short and squat, the mid-'70s compact car already has its celebrity association with Wayne and Garth as the Mirthmobile in “Wayne’s World.”

There’s no doubt Costanza deserved a better choice of car. In fact, he deserved a car that reflected the “Seinfeld” universe that was reopened in this special episode of "CCGC." Especially since that universe already contains the George Costanza of cars -- the K-Car era Chrysler LeBaron convertible, otherwise known as the “Jon Voight Car,” that George bought in the episode “The Mom & Pop Store."

Below, are three "Seinfeld" vehicles more worthy of George Costanza.

Cameron Crowe Remembers Philip Seymour Hoffman

One of Philip Seymour Hoffman's most beloved performances was as Lester Bangs in Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous." On Monday, one day after Hoffman was found dead from an apparent drug overdose in his New York City apartment, Crowe posted a remembrance of working with the late actor on a key scene in the seminal film: Bangs' "uncool" speech.

He’d leapt over the words and the script, and gone hunting for the soul and compassion of the private Lester, the one only a few of us had ever met. Suddenly the portrait was complete. The crew and I will always be grateful for that front row seat to his genius.

Read Crowe's full memory of Hoffman over at Crowe's website, fittingly called The Uncool. Watch the scene in question below:

The transcript, via IMDb:

Lester Bangs: Aw, man. You made friends with them. See, friendship is the booze they feed you. They want you to get drunk on feeling like you belong.

William Miller: Well, it was fun.

Lester Bangs: They make you feel cool. And hey. I met you. You are not cool.

William Miller: I know. Even when I thought I was, I knew I wasn't.

Lester Bangs: That's because we're uncool. And while women will always be a problem for us, most of the great art in the world is about that very same problem. Good-looking people don't have any spine. Their art never lasts. They get the girls, but we're smarter.

William Miller: I can really see that now.

Lester Bangs: Yeah, great art is about conflict and pain and guilt and longing and love disguised as sex, and sex disguised as love... and let's face it, you got a big head start.

William Miller: I'm glad you were home.

Lester Bangs: I'm always home. I'm uncool.

William Miller: Me too!

Lester Bangs: The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what we share with someone else when we're uncool.

William Miller: I feel better.

Lester Bangs: My advice to you. I know you think those guys are your friends. You wanna be a true friend to them? Be honest, and unmerciful.

Along with Lily Allen, Beck and Jenny Lewis, R&B crooner Miguel recorded a song for the second soundtrack to Lena Dunham's "Girls." Miguel's offering, "Simplethings," made its debut this week, showcasing the singer's celebrated vocals. Accompanied by an electric guitar, Miguel sings about the simple things in a relationship -- someone to "smoke with," someone to "lay with."

"We were in a fortunate position where we were able to get access to a lot of great songwriters and bands to give us new material or write us new material for the show," said "Girls" music supervisor Manish Raval in a recent interview with Radio.com. "It’s the same sound, same vibe, but one thing that’s different this season is we’ve had the luxury of getting people to contribute brand new songs for us."

Peep "Simplethings" below and pick up "Girls Volume 2: All Adventurous Women Do..." in stores Feb. 11.

Today Is The 55th Anniversary Of 'The Day The Music Died'

In the early hours of Feb. 3, 1959, a single-engined, 1947 Beechcraft Bonanza plane crashed in a cornfield near Clear Lake, Iowa, killing everyone on board. When investigators surveyed the wreckage later that day, they found the bodies of rock and roll artist Buddy Holly and tour-mates, Ritchie Valens and J. P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson, as well as the pilot, Roger Peterson.

The news sent a shock through the still-emerging rock and roll world. As Claire Suddath pointed out in a Time article for the 50th anniversary of the crash, however, the response to Holly's death was subdued compared to the farewells that would be given to later rockstars, many of whom became household names thanks in part to Holly's music.

Twelve years later, the pioneering 22-year-old from Lubbock, Texas proved again that he'd inspired a generation of musicians when Don McLean sang about his death -- along with those of Valens and Richardson -- dubbing Feb. 3 "the day the music died" in his renowned folk rock hit, "American Pie." While the song doesn't include mention of their names, McLean has said that he was inspired both by Holly's music, as well as the way he felt his life -- and the country, as it headed into the 1960s -- change soon after reading headlines about the plane crash that claimed Holly's life.

Below, McLean's "American Pie," accompanied by an unofficial music video aired on the program "Deja View" in the 1980s:

Correction: An earlier version of this story suggested that Holly's band included Valens and Richardson. While they had all played on the 1959 "Winter Dance Party Tour," they did so as separate acts.

Topless Women Film Messy NSFW Video In Columbia Library In The Name Of Art

A group of topless women staged a clandestine video shoot in Columbia University's Butler Library back in November, but the yolks on you -- their intention was not to titillate but to defy you to watch to the end.

The women were participating in an art video titled "INITIATIØN," which is the brainchild of Coco Young, a Columbia University undergraduate, and Karley Sciortino, who runs the blog Slutever. According to IvyGate, the film was shot in November but wasn't uploaded until this weekend.

A description of the video on Purple TV describes it as exploring "the rituals of American Ivy League secret societies, to the point of hysteria, highlighting our culture's perception of female desire."

In the NSFW video, the women remove their tops, crack eggs on each other and then rub the yolks into the floor. A few scenes show them crawling through a hallway in their underwear, and another has them licking what appears to be chocolate off each other's backs. All the while the Tapiola Children's Choir plays as the soundtrack.

Young gave an account of the filming to IvyGate:
Young told Ivygate that Sciortino approached her about doing a collaboration and they came up with the idea for this video. They filmed it very quickly and discreetly on a Saturday night in November. A few students were around, and they explained that they were filming a video, but New York is such an odd place that apparently no one was really fazed. They put up a tarp to block some of the weirder parts of filming. And yes, to address concerns, they did clean everything up before they left.

One person posted in Bwog's comment section: "I ran into these girls right after they finished filming this. When I gave them a weird look because they were dressed strangely, one of them said 'We're making a film. Do you want to be in it?' I'm really not sure if I should have said yes or no now..."

Others in the Bwog comments noted how despite the nudity, this video wasn't exactly arousing (unlike the amateur porn shot in Cornell University's library in 2012). Which was sort of the point, Young said.

"The more you watch, the more you get repulsed by it," Young told the New York Observer. "Men get hooked because they want to see naked girls, but then we do gross things and are not attractive at all ... We wanted to provide a critique on the institution and society, in general."

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is praising Joan Mondale for her contributions to arts and global understanding.

The wife of former Vice President Walter Mondale died Monday at age 83. Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are sending their condolences to the Mondale family and said they are grateful for her service to the country.

In a statement, the Obamas said Joan Mondale was a lifelong patron of the arts who filled the vice president's residence with work from dozens or artists. They said she did the same thing when her husband later became U.S. ambassador to Japan.

The Obamas called her a passionate advocate for the role of art in American life.

Read the full statement:

Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to former Vice President Walter Mondale and his family on the passing of Joan Adams Mondale. America first came to know Joan through her husband; she was his devoted partner in public service, from Minnesota to Washington. A lifelong patron of the arts, Joan filled the Vice Presidential mansion with works by dozens of artists, including many unknowns, and later did the same at the U.S. embassy in Japan during her husband’s tenure as ambassador. Through her contributions to the Federal Council on the Arts and Humanities and the Kennedy Center, she passionately advocated for the role of art in the life of our nation and the promotion of understanding worldwide. Our thoughts and prayers are with Vice President Mondale and his family today as we remember with gratitude “Joan of Art” and her service to our nation.

Marvin Gaye's 1964 Passport Discovered In Record Purchased At Estate Sale

How sweet it was for this Motown fan to find a hidden treasure like this: one lucky memorabilia collector spent 50 cents on an old record, only to have Martin Gaye's authentic 1964 passport fall out of the sleeve.

marvin gaye passport

The individual brought the passport to the television program "Antiques Roadshow," where appraiser Laura Woolley was excited by the find. She said that the piece is exceptionally rare and interesting because it represents such a happy and successful time in the singer's life, after he had signed his record deal.

"When he was signed as a solo artist with Motown, he decided to add that "E," and there's a lot of different theories: people say it's because he wanted to separate himself from his father or because he actually liked Sam Cooke so much, who had an "E" at the end of his name, that he wanted to imitate his idol. He had such a journey with Motown," Woolley explained.

When it came time to talk money, the collector was in for a shock. He had paid 50 cents per record, and just 25 cents per 45 single at the estate sale when he unknowingly picked up the passport. "I wouldn't put less than $20,000 on the passport if you were to insure it," Woolley told him. She noted that it is rare to discover a piece of Marvin Gaye memorabilia because there is simply not very much of it out there.

The collector's reaction to the news was shocked and almost reverent. "Wow. I never would have thought. I mean, I'm just shocked. I mean... wow. Oh gosh, thank you," he said.

Gaye sang R&B hits "How Sweet It Is (To be Loved By You)," "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" and "Sexual Healing." He died in 1984 when he was shot in the chest by his father at age 44. Listen to his hit "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You), which was released in 1964, the same year as he attained the passport, below.

How Facebook Made 'Humans Of New York' Huge

In 2010, Brandon Stanton moved to New York City with two suitcases and a goal of taking 10,000 photos. Nearly four years later, his work has produced a bestselling book and one of the most active followings on social media, with a single photo garnering anywhere from 30,000 to 280,000 Facebook "likes" in a matter of minutes.

Unfamiliar with Stanton's photography? Chances are you do know "Humans of New York," the name of his wildly successful blog and Facebook page. Stanton was among users profiled in Facebook-produced videos celebrating the site's 10th anniversary.

And with more people growing tired of loud oversharers on the social networking site, "Humans of New York" provides a breath of fresh air with its intimate glimpses into the lives of everyday New Yorkers.

Stanton, who has no professional or academic background in photography, credits much of his success to using the social networking site as his key platform to post his work.

"I had thousands of photos and I had been doing it for months," Stanton says. "Nobody was paying attention. And one day I started a page called Humans of New York. We started getting one new fan a day, two new fans a day. And I said 'Forget everything else. This is what's working for me. I started uploading my pictures directly to Facebook and all of a sudden it just -- " Here, he made the only noise that could adequately capture the site's meteoric success.

'The Bachelor': Juan Pablo Sleeps With Clare, Tells Her He Regrets It

On the latest episode of "The Bachelor," Clare got some one-on-one time with Juan Pablo after sneaking out of the house at 4 a.m. The pair headed for the beach for a moonlit dip in the ocean ... and quite a bit more.

If there was any doubt about what did or didn't happen during their late-night rendezvous, Clare gave a rather specific toast later on. She said, "Cheers to finding, being loved and making love." The other women were understandably stunned.

But while Clare was celebrating their apparent sexual encounter, Juan Pablo was regretting it. He pulled her aside later and said that he felt it set a bad example for his daughter. E! Online's Tierney Bricker was shocked by his reaction, writing, "Team Clare all the way on this one. Juan Pabs did not handle this the right way. At all."

Over at The Stir, Mary Fischer found an awkward silver lining for Clare. "If he really does dump her right after ‘you know’ -- it does put her in a good position to be the next Bachelorette," she wrote. "Who cares about being dumped directly after going all the way if you at least get a decent TV gig out of it?”

"The Bachelor" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.

'Vanderpump Rules' Finale: Shocking Confession Leads To Violence

Just last week, Kristen was adamant that she had not slept with Stassi's boyfriend, Jax, on "Vanderpump Rules." Even when Stassi slapped her for it, Kristen insisted that she didn't do it. This week, though, she came clean.

“I can’t look you in the eye, because I f*cking lied to your face," Kristen told Stassi. "Yes, I did have sex with him one time.”

Stassi was so stunned, she couldn't react for a moment. Finally, she said, "You f*cked my ex-boyfriend and cheated on your boyfriend! Are you kidding? What is wrong with you?!”

“Everything.” After that confession, Kristen's boyfriend, Tom, reacted by punching Jax in the middle of Sur, causing a major scene.

What surprised Wetpaint's Ryan Gajewski the most was the fact that Tom was sticking by Kristen, despite her cheating on him with his so-called best friend. “We cannot wait to see everyone defend themselves at the first part of the Season 2 reunion next week," he wrote. "We have a feeling Jax will be looking quite confused, but probably for real.”

Part 1 of the "Vanderpump Rules" reunion airs next Monday at 9 p.m. EST on Bravo.

That Awkward Moment When Zac Efron Got A Piece Of Skin From A Fan

Celebrities have crazy fan encounters, and they receive all kinds of interesting things in the mail from their supporters. On "Conan," Zac Efron was on with his "That Awkward Moment" co-star, Miles Teller. Conan O'Brien wanted to know Efron's craziest fan encounter, and Teller knew what it would be immediately.

“I was like, ‘Zac, what’s the craziest thing a fan has sent you?’" Teller said. "He was like, ‘Oh, I had a fan send me a piece of their skin.’”

Efron couldn't even properly enunciate how flabbergasted he was to receive the gift. Or perhaps his inability to explain it perfectly captured his inability to comprehend what he'd received. Finally, he said he couldn't help but laugh, because he had no idea what to do with skin.

Both Zac Efron and Miles Teller can be seen in "That Awkward Moment," in theaters now. It's not off to a great start, opening to just $9 million over Super Bowl weekend, coming in third behind "Ride Along" and "Frozen."

"Conan" airs weeknights at 11 p.m. EST on TBS.

The interior, of course, features high ceilings and plate glass windows that offer stunning views of its surroundings. Though this is a home that wouldn't really work out in our reality, that doesn't mean we don't actively covet a few features from the property.

Here's what we wish we could have for our own homes.

Sports Illustrated celebrated 50 years of the most famous single-issue magazine franchise in the world -- as well as the most profitable at more than $1.5 billion. "Sports Illustrated Swimsuit: 50 Years of Beautiful" was a star-studded event, featuring many of the magazine's cover girls. But only one could take home the coveted title of "greatest cover of all time."

In the end, Kathy Ireland was declared the top of the heap for her iconic 1989 issue. "Oh my goodness. 25 years ago?" Ireland marveled. "We never dreamed that that image would be celebrated in this way.”

The honor stands alongside Ireland's other impressive SI Swimsuit Issue feats. She appeared in the Swimsuit Issue for 13 consecutive years, including three covers -- in one of those, she was pregnant.

The 2014 edition of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue hits newsstands on Tuesday, February 18, kicking off the next 50 years of beautiful women.

Artist Shows 'What Happens When Homosexuality Meets Poverty'

A short film about an Argentine artist named Ioshua chronicles the man's quest to fit in and stand out at the same time. But there are a lot of obstacles in his way.

"What happens when homosexuality meets poverty in a slum in South America and turns the life of the writer and visual artist Ioshua into a stereotype-challenging-icon?" the Vimeo description notes.

A chronicler of gay life through comic-book-like sketches, Ioshua describes his rebuffed efforts to break into the arts scene in Buenos Aires. Then he makes a fateful move that vaults him to greater recognition.

The film, "IOSHUA -- Escaping From a Shantytown Closet," by Juan Delgado, is getting another look by some outlets since it was posted on Vimeo in 2012.

The story of a struggling artist who overcame his circumstance still resonates.

Cartoon Network's Adult Swim Expanding To Earlier 8 P.M. EST Start

Known for a wide variety of subversive shows like "Childrens Hospital," "Rick and Morty" and "Robot Chicken," Cartoon Network's Adult Swim will be expanding to take over even more of the network. Currently, Adult Swim takes over Cartoon Network's airwaves from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. EST. Starting March 31, Adult Swim will be kicking off an hour earlier, at 8 p.m. EST.

Stuart Snyder, president and COO of Turner's AYAKM (Animation, Young Adults & Kids Media) noted that Adult Swim already "ranks as No.1 in adults 18-34 on basic cable and is coming off its most-watched year ever." It certainly makes sense to reward that kind of success. Fans of the network's "early prime" shows like "Regular Show" and "Adventure Time" needn't worry, as those shows aren't going anywhere. Many have already noted that they're already similar in tone and approach to Adult Swim programming, so they create a perfect bridge into the network's more mature offerings.

To make up for the lost hour -- and basically losing all of prime time to Adult Swim -- Cartoon Network is going to be pushing its digital platforms, where fans will be able to find plenty of new and original content. The new 8 p.m. hour of Adult Swim will kick off by airing back-to-back reruns of "King of the Hill" leading into "The Cleveland Show" at 9 p.m EST.
