Queen Latifah, 43, returned to her home state to hit the field at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium on Sunday, performing "America the Beautiful" just before kickoff at Superbowl XLVIII.

This isn't Queen Latifah's first exposure to the NFL's biggest game, nor to the patriotic song: Latifah also performed "America the Beautiful" at the 2010 Super Bowl.

Last year, the tune was performed by Jennifer Hudson with students from Sandy Hook Elementary School, the Newtown, Conn. school where 26 people, including 20 children, were murdered on Dec. 14, 2012. Hudson was joined by 26 Sandy Hook students for her performance.

Other past "America the Beautiful" performers included Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert, Lea Michele and Faith Hill.

Latifah introduced the 2014 Super Bowl between the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos. The game also plays host to opera singer Renee Fleming for the national anthem, and Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers for the halftime show.

American opera singer Renée Fleming belted out the "The Star-Spangled Banner" before kickoff at Super Bowl XLVIII on Sunday. A 32-voice military choir accompanied the soprano during the performance, backed by a recording of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.

Fleming made news before the Super Bowl by announcing that she would perform the national anthem live, without the benefit of a backing vocal track. "It would be a disaster. I only know how to sing live," she said (via The Associated Press).

Fleming is the first opera singer to perform "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Super Bowl, which typically enlists pop stars for the event. Recent national anthem singers include Alicia Keys, Jennifer Hudson, Billy Joel, Beyonce and Cher. Fleming previously performed at President Barack Obama's 2009 inauguration and at the 2003 World Series.

The Seattle Seahawks and Denver Broncos were set to face off against each other in Super Bowl XLVIII. The NFL's biggest game is held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Car commercials can be kind of run of the mill, but this ad from Maserati for the 2014 Ghibli is actually pretty epic.

The commercial's tag line, "Now we strike," is a little ominous, but the overall effect is surprisingly cool.

Cinematic in nature, the Maserati spot also features the ever-amazing young actress Quvenzhané Wallis, of "Beast of the Southern Wild" fame.

Red Hot Chili Peppers Perform During Super Bowl Halftime Show

The Red Hot Chili Peppers joined Bruno Mars on stage during the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show, performing their song "Give It Away."

The Chili Peppers' '90s funk rock and Mars retro-pop proved to be a dynamic combination during the halftime show.

Despite being shirtless for their performance, the Chili Peppers kept things G-rated. Not that their behavior wasn't in question: Back in January, bassist Flea had asked his Twitter followers if they wanted to see his "c--k" during the Super Bowl. (The tweet was soon deleted.) Fortunately, Flea avoided becoming the next wardrobe malfunction on the Super Bowl stage.

On Jan. 29, a song called "Abracadabralifornia" surfaced on the Internet, claiming to be a new Chili Peppers song crafted specifically for their Super Bowl showing. The song, however, was quickly revealed as a hoax, originally recorded in 2013 by comedian Jon Daly and Hot Karate frontman Cyrus Ghahremani for the podcast "Comedy Bang Bang" as an homage to the band.

Drummer Chad Smith also said that after their Super Bowl performance, the band will be focusing on writing their next album.

Bruno Mars' Super Bowl Halftime Show Is An Unorthodox Jukebox

Bruno Mars headlined the Super Bowl XLVII halftime show on Sunday night in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

The show began with Mars behind a drum kit before he ripped into "Locked Out of Heaven," his hit single from "Unorthodox Jukebox." Mars also performed "Treasure," "Runaway Baby" and a little bit of the Isley Brothers song "Shout." He also helped Red Hot Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis on "Give It Away," a seminal hit from the Los Angeles rock band.

Mars closed his set with the ballad "Just The Way You Are."

bruno mars

Mars' involvement in the NFL's biggest game was announced in September of last year. The 28-year-old singer was born in Hawaii and he has become one of the most popular stars in pop music on the back of his albums, "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" and "Unorthodox Jukebox." That latter album, released in December of 2012, won Mars a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album during the Jan. 26 ceremonies.

"No matter where I perform, it's my job to uplift the people -- whether I'm performing at a graduation party, wedding, bar mitzvah, Grammys, Super Bowl, I'm gonna give it all I got," Mars said of the Super Bowl halftime show during a press conference days before the event. "I don't trapeze and all that stuff. I hope to get people dancing and get people smiling. if you ever come to my shows, it's just us up there with these songs and our instruments. I hope that's enough."

As Forbes noted, the NFL does not pay its Super Bowl halftime entertainers; rather, the league covers all of the expenses for the performances.

Last year, Beyonce ran the world and Super Bowl halftime show, staging a much heralded reunion with Kelly Rowand and Michelle Williams from Destiny's Child.

This year's Super Bowl was held at MetLife Stadium at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Denver Broncos faced off with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL's big game. The score before Mars' performance was 22-0 in favor of Seattle.

One of the reigning queens of comedy, Ellen Degeneres is known in part for her propensity to break it down anywhere, any time.

The colorful talk show host's dance moves were front and center in the Beats Music Super Bowl commercial this year, which took inspiration from the Goldilocks fairy tale. Like Goldilocks before her, Ellen must sample a variety of different things -- in this case, music playlists -- before finding the tunes that are just right.

After using Beats Music's app to find the perfect mix, Ellen starts a dance party with a family of bears that arrive just in time to join in on the fun.

Jerry Seinfeld wasn't kidding when he told New York radio hosts Boomer Esiason and Craig Carton on Thursday that the rumored "Seinfeld" reunion was happening "very, very soon."

During the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday night, Seinfeld (as Jerry), Jason Alexander (as George) and Wayne Knight (as Newman) reunited for a special, fictional version of Seinfeld's "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee." The mini-episode, which Seinfeld said was not affiliated with "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" before it aired on Fox, featured Jerry and George arguing over Super Bowl party plans at Tom's Restaurant. Seinfeld wrote the script for the episode with Larry David.

"Fox approached Larry and me about doing some kind of 'Seinfeld' reunion for the halftime broadcast because of the New York connection," Seinfeld said in a statement provided to the New York Times. "So we thought throwing Jerry, George and Newman into a 'Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee' was a fun way to do it. Larry and I wrote the script in one sitting, just like old times, and working with him, Jason and Wayne was a total blast, as it always was."

Jennifer Lawrence, 'Hunger Games' Team Lost For Words Following Philip Seymour Hoffman's Death

The "Hunger Games" team is at a loss for words following the death of cast member Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Actress Jennifer Lawrence, film director Francis Lawrence, book author Suzanne Collins and others released a statement on behalf of the "Hunger Games" cast and crew Sunday (Feb. 2) after news broke of Hoffman's death.

"Words cannot convey the devastating loss we are all feeling right now," read the statement. "Philip was a wonderful person and an exceptional talent, and our hearts are breaking. Our deepest condolences go out to his family."

Hoffman played head gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee in 2013's "Catching Fire." He reprised the role for "Mockingjay Part 1" and, with only seven days of shooting left, was nearly finished filming "Mockingjay Part 2", Variety reported.

The release dates for parts one and two -- Nov. 21, 2014 and Nov. 20, 2015, respectively -- will not be affected, according to Variety.

Lionsgate, the studio behind the blockbuster franchise, released a statement as well: “Philip Seymour Hoffman was a singular talent and one of the most gifted actors of our generation. We’re very fortunate that he graced our Hunger Games family. Losing him in his prime is a tragedy, and we send our deepest condolences to Philip’s family.”

Hoffman was found dead on the bathroom floor of his New York City apartment. He was allegedly discovered with a syringe in his arm and 50 bags of heroin throughout his home, ABC News reported.

The 46-year-old, who entered drug detox treatment for 10 days last May, is believed to have died from a heroin overdose.

Will Arnett Didn't Get To Keep His LEGO Batman From 'The LEGO Movie'

Now that everyone in America has see "Frozen" more than once, the next must-see animated blockbuster, "The LEGO Movie," is ready to arrive in theaters.

"It's a movie meant for everybody. It really is just fun for adults and children," Will Arnett, who voices LEGO Batman in the film, told HuffPost Entertainment. "I'm so happy and impressed that we were able to make a movie that can appeal to so many. A pan-generational film."

Directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller ("21 Jump Street," "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs"), "The LEGO Movie" is more than just product placement (though there's plenty of that as well). It's a funny, witty romp about imagination and individuality in a world where both seem in short supply, featuring a voice cast of comedy all-stars that includes Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie, Will Ferrell and Arnett. HuffPost Entertainment spoke to Arnett about the new film, his affection for LEGOs in general and what he thought about the response to Season 4 of "Arrested Development."

You've worked on so many animated projects. When did you realize voice over was a talent you possessed?
When I first started really using my voice, which was for voice overs, I was dumb enough that I didn't realize it was something you could do. When someone said to me that it was, my answer was, "What are you talking about?" It was like a whole other world opened up. It quickly became something I was good at. I did that for many years. The world of animation and voicing characters, that's been something that's really cool and that I really like. I really like doing it because you can change things. I can't change the way that I look. There's only so much you can do. A lot of actors, Christian Bale and a lot of other actors do that, but it's a whole process. I can quickly change my voice and become another person more easily.

You mentioned Bale, who now has the most famous Batman voice. How did you decide on your version's sound?
It was what would make Chris Miller, Phil Lord and I laugh. Starting with Adam West and through Christian Bale, it feels like the voice of Batman has gotten more and more serious and dark. You know how Christian Bale talks like this. In a low tone. They had to amplify his voice, I guess, because it was very low and soft. So I wanted to take that and just have Batman talk in that voice all the time. Especially for super mundane stuff. "I have to get out of here because I have an appointment." That is hysterical.

How much of a LEGO fan were you growing up?
I played with LEGO by far more than any other toy. I have a brother almost 10 years my junior, and I introduced him to LEGO when I was probably far too old to be playing with them. I did that, basically, as a cover for my own continuing interest in building LEGO. Now I've been able to get back into it because I have two young sons. It's such a huge part of my day. In fact, I have a few LEGO figurines, including a Batman LEGO that they gave me. We had it as part of the promotion. I had this weird thing where my son was like, "There's my LEGO Batman." I said, "Actually it's mine, I need to take it to the junket." My son looked at me like, "Nope. That's mine." Like, "Don't be insane, dad. You're a grown-up and that's my LEGO." He wins. He was right. I said, "All right, here, you take it."

You've got a pretty stable gig on the CBS series "The Millers," does that kind of job afford you the chance to take more creative risks as an actor going forward?
It's interesting that you say that. That is kind of the stuff that I'm looking at now. In the last year, I've been part of a lot of films that also aim for a wider audience: "LEGO," "The Nut Job" and "Teenage Mutants Ninja Turtles," coming out this summer. But a lot of what I do these days is for my kids. It's about affording me the opportunity to spend time with my kids, or something my kids would want to see. I'm thinking about doing stuff now that will [be different]. I'll have the luxury.

What do you want to see from the fifth season of "Arrested Development"?
I think I would want to see what everybody else wants to see. By everybody else, I mean the fans, who are in a lot of ways, weirdly, part of the process of "Arrested Development" now. It was their desire to see more that brought it back. I also mean everybody who is on our side, the creative side, from Mitch through the cast. The next version is going to have all of us together much more. I know there was a lot written about us being not together because of schedules and because of whatever. Also, I think some of the way Mitch told that last story -- I don't think anybody has made anything like that before. This anthology, if you will. I found it to be very interesting. He's telling this story and I think it was very cool. Having said that, it will be nice to get the gang back together.

Did it feel like you guys were caught between a rock and a hard place, where if you just repeated the first three seasons, people would be disappointed, yet if you tried something new, like it was, people are also unhappy?
Absolutely. 100 percent. We were damned if we did and damned if we didn't. Unfortunately, we live in a world where not only does everyone have to have an opinion, but it tends resonate more if the opinion is shitty and mean. So unless you're saying something really shitty about something, you're not going to get heard. There were a lot of great reviews that really liked the show and thought it was really interesting. The stuff that kind of got through was negative: "'Arrested,' Not What It Was." That was inevitable! People trip over themselves to be the first to say the shit thing. They go out of their way. That, by way, cuts across everything. "Arrested Development" is not the only example of that. Everybody is susceptible to that. Not like I need to make some huge social commentary, but it's absolutely true. People can't wait -- whether it's Twitter or Facebook -- people can't wait to say something shitty.

You have a pretty visible social media presence. How do you deal with it there?
What ends up happening is that you have to keep everything on this frequency where you're like, "Whatever." That's really everything. It's a bummer. On the plus side of that, though, is the people who do like the show. Not to say people can't think whatever they want, but "Arrested Development really was a show that was brought back by the desire of fans to see more. I think that we do, in a lot of ways, hear what the fans say about the show. We kind of weirdly always have. We don't want to keep doing the show if we feel like overstaying our welcome. We don't want to ruin anyone's experience.

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — The Newport Folk Festival says gospel singer Mavis Staples will perform in this year's line-up.

Staples is the first act to be announced for the 2014 festival, which will take place from July 25 to July 27. The festival says special guests will honor her birthday and "75 Years of Mavis" throughout the weekend. Founder George Wein (WEEN') says Monday it's a joy to honor Staples. He says her family's band, The Staple Singers, was one of the first gospel groups to play at Newport and that they have appeared at both the folk and jazz festivals over the years.

The festival was first held in 1959 and has featured influential musicians like Joan Baez, Pete Seeger and Johnny Cash.

Other musical acts will be announced later.

'New Girl': Prince Gives Jess Relationship Advice

A near miss by a speeding car led to the girls getting an invite to party with Prince on "New Girl" -- hey, they needed to set this up somehow! The guys each found their own ways to sneak into the party as well, leading to Prince taking up the unexpected position of relationship guru for Jess and Nick.

The night started off awkwardly when Nick said "I love you" to Jess. It was a surprise to both of them, but Jess didn't say it back. Instead she did finger guns back at him.

Prince gave Jess some good advice, and then took it a few steps further. He trained her through methods that perhaps only make sense to him, including table tennis, pancakes, and locking her in a dark closet. Jess emerged back into the party wearing a dress Prince picked out for her and shouted, "I love you, Nick Miller!"

It was a big moment for the characters, and a huge guest star -- and it got the post-Super Bowl spot -- but TVLine's Kimberly Roots was still unimpressed. "The installment is not 'New Girl‘s' sharpest, though Prince’s willingness to poke fun at his eccentric image is a fun surprise," she wrote. "Still, I didn’t laugh out loud once during the half hour. Throughout, I wondered what 'The Mindy Project' would’ve/could’ve done with such a powerful time slot at its disposal."

"New Girl" airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. EST on Fox.

Skinny Puppy Claim U.S. Military Used Their Music To Torture Guantanamo Prisoners

$

Vancouver's iconic industrial rockers Skinny Puppy have invoiced the U.S. government upon hearing that their music was being used as a "torture device" on prisoners at Guantanamo Bay.

Music has long been used as a wartime torture device. George Bush Sr. famously blasted Van Halen's "Panama" to drive Panamanian president Manuel Noriega from his refuge at the Vatican embassy. Then he turned the volume up to 11 during the first Iraq War, infamously playing Metallica and AC/DC.

"These people haven't heard heavy metal," a sergeant said at the time. "They can't take it. If you play it for 24 hours, your brain and body functions start to slide, your train of thought slows down and your will is broken. That's when we come in and talk to them."

Metallica was used again during the War on Terror "to induce sleep deprivation, prolong capture shock, disorient detainees during interrogations - and also drown out screams." (Eminem and Barney the Dinosaur also got some spins.)

In 2009, Metallica's drummer Lars Ulrich told Rachel Maddow they didn't "advocate or condone" their music being used for torture, while noting, "If there are people that are dumb enough to use Metallica to interrogate prisoners, you're forgetting about all the music that's to the left of us. I can name, you know, 30 Norwegian death metal bands that would make Metallica sound like Simon and Garfunkel."

Story continues after slideshow:

Well, it looks like the U.S. military listened, and they may have moved on to the harder industrial sounds of Skinny Puppy.

That's what the band's founder cEvin Key claimed in an interview with the Phoenix New Times discussing their 2013 album "Weapon."

"We had a cool concept on the record because we heard through a reliable grapevine that our music was being used in Guantanamo Bay prison camps to musically stun or torture people. We heard that our music was used in at least four occasions. We thought it would be a good idea to make an invoice to the U.S. government for musical services, thus the concept of the record title, 'Weapon.'"

While Key says they never sent the invoice ("the album cover is the invoice") he reiterated that they were none too happy about how their music was allegedly being used.

"We never supported those types of scenarios. It's kind of typical that we thought this would end up happening, in a weird way. Because we make unsettling music we can see it being used in a weird way. But it doesn't sit right with us."

If they had sent the invoice, they may have had a legal leg to stand on. In a blog post titled "Is Torture by Music a 'Performance in Public'?," Canadian copyright lawyer Howard Knopf argued yes.

"Certain collectives are quick to collect money from those in nursing homes, hospitals, prisons etc. on the basis that these are 'public' places. Never mind that the audience is captive and it's their home, like it or not...

"Leaving aside the legal niceties about whose law if any applies in that dreadful place, one can only wonder if ASCAP might not want a piece of the action. After all, it went after the Girl Guides not so long ago. And if it could try to make a buck off Girl Guides, who are nice people, why not alleged terrorists? Why should terrorists enjoy free music?"
