Prada Marfa Vandalized [UPDATED]

0
0
Over the weekend, vandals defaced Scandinavian artists Elmgreen and Dragset’s “Prada Marfa,” the simulated Prada storefront that has, since its installation in 2005, brought international attention to a remote stretch of Texas highway. The small structure was covered in signs for popular espadrilles brand TOMS shoes, written graffiti, and splattered blue paint; pamphlets in a style somewhere between French theorist Jean Baudrillard and the brochure an insane cultist shoved into your hands on the subway yesterday were also scattered on the premises. A local reporter, Lisa Morton of The Van Horn Advocate, posted the above video of the scene on YouTube and disclosed the pamphlet’s garbled statement of purpose for the vandalism:

'Boondocks' Creator's Live-Action Comedy, 'Black Jesus,' Coming To Adult Swim

Aaron McGruder has courted controversy since the beginning with his comic strip "The Boondocks." That sharp sense of satire and humor continued as he first adapted, and then transitioned his signature property to Adult Swim. Now, McGruder is bringing a second series to the late-night programming block ... and this one comes with built-in controversy.

"Black Jesus" will be a live-action, half-hour comedy that sees Jesus living today in Compton, CA. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he's "on a daily mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers." Somehow, we doubt that's going to go smoothly.

The new comedy is already in production, with an anticipated premiere scheduled for later this year. And not to worry, "Boondocks" fans. A fourth season of that show is still on the way. Considering it took McGruder five years to put out the first three seasons, we should be used to waiting by now.

'Game Of Thrones' Creator Reveals He Knows How The Books Will End

A select few people know how "Game of Thrones" will end ... and you're probably not one of them.

The cast of the mega-hit HBO fantasy series graces the cover of the April issue of Vanity Fair in a beach photo shoot by Annie Leibovitz, along with an article in the issue entitled "The Gathering Storm."

The piece reveals tidbits about the future of the series, including how the show's creators, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss know the ending of the book series.

Benioff told Vanity Fair how Weiss and him went out to Santa Fe to meet with author George R.R. Martin and discuss where the series is headed. "If you know the ending, then you can lay the groundwork for it. And so we want to know how everything ends," said Benioff. "We want to be able to set things up. So we just sat down with him and literally went through every character.”

Benioff knows generally how the series will end, but Martin still doesn't know the exact details of the future books himself. “I can give them the broad strokes of what I intend to write, but the details aren’t there yet," revealed Martin. He also laid to rest fans' fears that the series would outpace the books. "I’m hopeful that I can not let them catch up with me.”

The April issue of Vanity Fair is available March 13.

Watch The First 8 Minutes Of The 'Veronica Mars' Movie Now!

The closer we get to the premiere of the "Veronica Mars" film, the more Rob Thomas and company seem determined to have us lining up around our local theaters, aching to get in. After recently releasing the first two minutes of the film online, they've upped the ante considerably.

Warner Bros. released the first eight minutes of the movie to Fandango. While those first two minutes served as a kind of refresher as to how Veronica spent her teenage years as a crime-solving slueth, the ensuing six get to the business of kicking off her latest adventure.

Finally, we get to see the adult Veronica in action. We get to see her interview for a job, as well as spend some quality time on her relationship with Piz. And most importantly, we get the launch of the mystery at the center of this crowd-funded film.

We're not sure if they'll offer us any more minutes in anticipation of the film's March 14 release, but they don't have to. If we weren't hooked before, we're definitely on board now. Mission accomplished, guys!

Watson gives a silly and adorable introduction to the clip, and it's definitely contrary to the overall tone of the trailer. Acting! She will star in the film alongside Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Anthony Hopkins and Logan Lerman, among others.

Comedian Jenny Collier Talks After Being Dropped From A Show That Had 'Too Many Women'

Last Thursday, comedian Jenny Collier tweeted out this screenshot of a message from Mirth Control, the largest independent comedy booker in the UK.

The tweet immediately caught fire, receiving over 6,000 retweets and raising the heart rate of just about everyone who responded to it.

"I was completely stunned," Collier told the Huffington Post. "I read it out to the people I was with and they were convinced it was a joke."

Collier received some attention from fellow comedians like Frankie Boyle and Sarah Silverman, who both sent out the kind of tweets you'd expect them to.

Boyle, of course, raised the strongest point of irony: all of this went down on International Women's Day.

Since the incident and the aforementioned outrage, Mirth Control has apologized profusely.

“We apologise unreservedly for any offence caused," the booking agency said, according to The Independent. "We will not accept a relationship with any client who wishes to exclude women entirely from all bills, this is a consistent policy that has spanned many years. However this request was not to place any 'ban' on female comics only to temper the numbers in order to suit their clientele.”

Fortunately, Collier expressed that the support she received was reassuring and that this kind of thing isn't entirely uncommon.

"I've had overwhelming support from my fellow comics (female and male)," Collier added during her interview with the Huffington Post. "The comments and messages I've received point to this being a widespread issue that many comics have experienced, the only difference in this case being that it was put into writing."

Neil Patrick Harris In Out Magazine: 'Hedwig' Experience Brings Up 'Homophobic Insecurities'

Neil Patrick Harris came out as gay in 2006, but the "How I Met Your Mother" star says that hasn't had any impact on his longstanding appeal among female fans.

"I’ve found that a lot of girls have no issue with me being gay," Harris, 40, tells Out magazine's Aaron Hicklin. "They still want to marry me. And I love that.”

In the new interview, Harris also speaks about his forthcoming return to the Broadway stage in the rock musical "Hedwig and the Angry Inch," in which he'll play the titular character, a transgender glam rock singer from East Germany.

Check out one of Michael Muller's photos from the Out shoot, then scroll down to keep reading:

"Hedwig is bringing up a lot of super insecure things within me,” Harris, who was previously seen on Broadway in "Cabaret" and "Assassins," says of the experience so far. “I have never thought drag was intoxicating, I’ve never had a fun drunken Halloween in drag, never been in heels, really. I’ve lived my whole life being attracted by masculinity -- it’s why I like guys."

He then added, "I’m not a super effete person, and I have to turn into that, and in doing so it brings up a lot of homophobic insecurities within myself.”

19-year-old Sara (aka Smoukahontas) wowed Internet viewers last week when she spoke perfectly accented gibberish to demonstrate how languages sound to non-speakers.

Fans could not get enough of Sara's talents, and asked her to sing -- and boy, did she deliver.

Watch this Finnish woman belt out everything from rap to opera in her bathroom, because let's face it, the acoustics are better in there.

Not that she needs the help.

Banksy's Latest Work Protests Violence Against Syrian Children

Banksy plans to project his latest picture, of a young girl, on to Nelson’s Column as part of a global protest against the situation in Syria.

The graffiti artist’s latest work was revealed on his website last night and will be projected in London and other locations across the world tomorrow.

A vigil is being organised in Trafalgar Square by the #WithSyria campaign — a coalition that includes Oxfam, Save the Children and Amnesty International — to mark the third anniversary of the conflict in Syria.

In a statement revealed by clicking on the figure, the artist recalls the arrest and torture of children in the Syrian town of Daraa in March 2011 for painting anti-authoritarian graffiti.

“The protests that followed their detention led to an outbreak of violence that would see a domestic uprising transform into a civil war displacing 9.3 million people from their homes,” he says.

Mayor Boris Johnson is backing the vigil and said: “The UK has a history of sticking up for oppressed people —  and Londoners support all efforts to ensure the people of Syria do not lose another year to bloodshed and suffering.”

Heaven 17 founder Martin Ware has produced a 3D soundscape including Syrian voices and sounds from refugee camps in Jordan that will be played at the event which takes place at 6pm.

'Veronica Mars' Movie Review: Kristen Bell Still Has It

0
0
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Canceled by the CW in 2007, the cult-fave mystery series "Veronica Mars" completed its third season with an (open-ended) episode titled "The Bitch Is Back." Revived for the big screen, the gumshoe drama finds its title character, nine years later, insisting that she's in a mellower frame of mind, no longer the angry, crime-solving kickass who thrills to danger. As if.

After a murder hits close to home, the law-school grad tosses aside her sleek job-interview threads and is soon sleuthing it up among the rich, famous, corrupt and depraved who populate her SoCal hometown. Kristen Bell is in fine form as the sharp-witted and stiletto-tongued Veronica, whose high polish on the art of sarcasm has endeared her to fans as a supremely self-possessed outsider. As with the TV show, the connect-the-dots mystery solving is less interesting than the character dynamics; crimes unravel with a directness that feels aimed at younger audiences. The dark doings are leavened, and sometimes undercut, by comedy, and by angst that's not far removed from adolescence. Thomas' sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll neo-noir has a young-adult heart that still beats strong, even with Veronica and her friends well into their twenties. The 10-year reunion of Neptune High just happens to be impending when Veronica returns home to help solve a murder, and teen allegiances, animosities and romances loom large in the film, which features many actors reprising their small-screen roles.

Creator Rob Thomas and co-scripter Diane Ruggiero provide a concise recap of the series' trajectory, in the form of a stylized montage with voiceover narration, that will bring even newbies up to speed on the central character. Cut to Manhattan, where the sight of Veronica in the glass-walled conference room of a prestigious Manhattan law firm, interviewing for a job, is bound to disappoint aficionados, who are used to seeing her speak truth to power, not cozy up to it.

The crime that brings her back to her fictitious beach town of Neptune, Calif., is the apparent murder of pop star Bonnie DeVille (Andrea Estella), a high school classmate and girlfriend of Veronica's former flame Logan (Jason Dohring), himself a demi-celebrity because he's the son of an actor. He's suspect No. 1, and Veronica doesn't hesitate to drop everything to help him, leaving behind a potential new job in New York and supportive boyfriend Piz (Chris Lowell). The Piz-Logan dilemma — good guy vs. bad boy, straightforward vs. complicated — is a fundamental element of the movie, in a way that starts out YA and turns believably grown-up messy.

As she digs into the case, Veronica reconnects with close friends Mac (Tina Majorino) and Wallace (Percy Daggs III), trades barbs with surfer jerk Dick (Ryan Hansen) and circumvents the dishonest, obstructionist sheriff (Jerry O'Connell). In the process she crosses paths with a wacko fan of the dead pop singer (Gaby Hoffmann) and uncovers a very cold 9-year-old case that involves a collective silence among her former classmates.

The screenplay doesn't avoid bouts of where-are-they-now exposition as it draws connective lines between high school and adulthood. But at its strongest, as in Veronica's relationship with her sheriff-turned-private-investigator father (Enrico Colantoni), there's no need to spell things out. Colantoni is understated and terrific as a man who has weathered serious challenges and reversals. The father-daughter chemistry between him and Bell is an essential component of the movie, as of the series — loaded with emotion but never lapsing into sentimentality.

A dark thread runs through the movie that has no direct bearing on the crimes Veronica is trying to solve. She makes repeated references to her absent alcoholic mother and, most jarringly, to addiction in general. It's a thread that doesn't feel fully integrated into the film, but suggests material that Thomas might explore if he decides to make a second Veronica Mars feature.

"Veronica Mars," a Warner Bros. release, is rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association of America for "sexuality including references, drug content, violence and some strong language." Running time: 107 minutes.

MPAA rating definition for PG-13: Parents strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13.

Marcia Gay Harden On '50 Shades Of Grey' And Jamie Dornan

0
0
NEW YORK (AP) — Since being cast in the film adaptation of "Fifty Shades of Grey," Jamie Dornan, who plays the S&M-loving billionaire Christian Grey, has largely stayed out of the public eye.

Aside from being spotted on the streets of Vancouver, British Columbia, while filming the movie, the 31-year-old Dornan hasn't walked any red carpets or really talked about the role. He did tweet on Jan. 1 from his official account, "looking forward to 2015," which hinted at the film's scheduled release next February. (That tweet was retweeted more than 5,000 times.)

This aura of mystery surrounding Dornan is a good thing, says Marcia Gay Harden, who plays his character's mother in the film.

"I think the point is to have somebody mysterious because if you have somebody with too much pedigree to them ... you can't stop thinking about the pedigree. You just can't. It's almost impossible in a film to do that. ... I think that would be very hard to do for that role, so I think it's good that he's a bit of a mystery."

Dornan had a recurring role on ABC's "Once Upon a Time" and starred in the Irish TV drama series "The Fall" as a serial killer who targets women. The show was renewed for a second season.

So, what can she share about him?

"He's beautiful. He's chiseled beauty and the camera eats it up. He's an Irish boy. ... A U.K.-based actor who has done a bit of film. He just had a baby (with wife Amelia Warner). ... He's a sweet guy. He does surfing. He sings little Irish ditties occasionally," she said.

As for playing the mom of such a sexually charged character, the 54-year-old Harden says her scenes were more PG-rated.

"If you are not in the red playroom of pain and pleasure with some naked flesh in your face and a sex toy in your hand, the experience of shooting the movie is much like doing any other movie. I'm the mom. I'm momma Grey," she joked.

Harden is one of the stars of the comedy "Trophy Wife," airing Tuesdays on ABC.

Is Katy Perry's 'Dark Horse' Better As A Gothic, R&B Song? You Be The Judge (VIDEO)

0
0
No pop song is safe from the hands of Scott Bradlee and Postmodern Jukebox.

We can always count on the incredible musical collective to take a Top 40 hit and turn it into something classic, and their take on Katy Perry's "Dark Horse" is no exception. By combining gothic "movie theme" music, R&B and the vocal talents of Ashley Stroud the group turned "Dark Horse" into a horse of a different color. "Perhaps unintentionally, it sounds a bit like a "'Bond' theme, too," they wrote in the video description.

Which version do you think is better? Let us know in the comments below!
