Guys, Someone Has Been Tweeting All The Constellations

0
0
Is that the Big Dipper on Twitter?

Since Dec. 15, someone has been tweeting the constellations, or more specifically, digital recreations of star configurations.

Created by @artonaline, an anonymous Twitter account that tweets as ASCII art, the new project, called @C0NSTELLATl0NS, shares outlines of named constellations -- but without their names.

So, the catch is that each tweet is just a computerized version of the group of stars. No additional information is included.

Death and Taxes Magazine writes, "Sure, it’s pointless, but so is pretty much everything else on Twitter." But we'd beg to differ. The frequent tweets could serve as a game for astronomy buffs who can identify constellations by their outline alone.

Given the number of official constellations -- a total of 88 have been named by astronomers -- the Twitter account may be short-lived. We say take advantage while you can!

Can you guess the constellations below?

An 11-Year-Old Challenged A Heavy Metal Band To A Guitar Duel And Won The Internet (VIDEO)

When fans attend concerts of their favorite musicians, they sometimes wave banners that express their devotion to the artist or band on stage.

But when 11-year-old Aidan Fisher attended a Steel Panther concert in December, he brandished a very different kind of sign -- one that challenged the lead guitarist of the heavy metal band to a guitar duel.

“[T]hey've brought people out of the audience to play before, so I thought, what the heck, we'll make a sign and see what happens,” the boy's dad, who had accompanied him to the concert in Kansas City, Mo., told KETV.

During the show, the band took notice of the young man's challenge and called him on stage. It was then that Aidan, now with a guitar in hand, blew the audience away by shredding not one, but two impressive guitar solos.

As the Kansas City Star writes, Aidan's rendition of Eddie Van Halen’s solo "Eruption" "was so impressive that the band kept him on stage for Van Halen’s version of ‘You Really Got Me.’”

Since being uploaded on YouTube on Dec. 23, the cell phone video of Fisher's performance has gone viral, racking up more than 1.3 million views thus far.

"This kids rocks," wrote one impressed YouTuber after watching the clip. "I wish I had that much talent on the guitar."

Imagine Dragons' 'Demons' Turned Into A Classical Piece Is The Most Beautiful Version You'll Hear

0

With songs like the dubstep-influenced "Radioactive" dominating the airwaves, you might not expect an Imagine Dragons cover to consist simply of three strings: a violin, a cello, and a double bass.

Classical trio Simply Three took that challenge head on with their recent cover of Imagine Dragons' "Demons," and it's incredible how the same song can take on such a different sound under their bows.

This passionate version is "simply" tops.

A Grand Redesign of MoMA Does Not Spare a Notable Neighbor

The Museum of Modern Art unveiled on Wednesday a sweeping redesign of its Midtown building, featuring a retractable glass wall, vast new gallery space and the opening of its entire first floor, including the beloved sculpture garden, free to the public.

It is unclear whether this grand, ambitious plan will be enough to quell protests over the long-planned and controversial part of the museum’s overhaul: the razing of its next-door neighbor on West 53rd Street, the noteworthy, if idiosyncratic, former home of the American Folk Art Museum.

MoMA Announces Plans For Sweeping, Controversial Redesign

0
0
New York City's Museum of Modern Art announced big plans Wednesday for a sweeping redesign, including an admission-free first floor and the demolition of the American Folk Art Museum. Museum director Glenn D. Lowry revealed the news after six months of working with architecture team Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

moma

The preliminary vision for the redesign consists of expanding the museum to encompass what are now three floors of an adjacent residential tower being developed by Hines and the site of the former American Folk Art Museum. The destruction of the latter space, a beloved 13-year-old architectural feat designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects, is especially heartbreaking. MoMA has owned the Folk Art Museum since it experienced financial troubles in 2011, and the mammoth institution has, throughout the year, debated whether the building could be spared in the process of MoMA's redesign.

Eventually, MoMA's architects resolved that even saving the building would undermine its architectural strength. "The analysis that we undertook was lengthy and rigorous, and ultimately led us to the determination that creating a new building on the site of the former American Folk Art Museum is the only way to achieve a fully integrated campus," Lowry said in his statement. Liz Diller of Diller Scofidio + Renfro explained the decision further to the Wall Street Journal: "Here, there’s a kind of ethical problem that to save the building … you end up losing so much of it that in the end, the integrity is gone."

moa

The good news is, MoMA's redesign will massively increase accessibility, opening the entire expanded first floor and Sculpture Garden to the public for free. Insiders also hope the expansion will alleviate the crowds that make hit museum shows feel like nightclubs. (Ahem, Munch's "The Scream.") Yet even considering the perks, many think it's sad that New York has lost one of its greatest architectural underdogs.

"If a commercial developer were to tear down a small, idiosyncratic and beautifully wrought museum in order to put up a deluxe glass box, it would be attacked as a venal and philistine act," Justin Davidson wrote in New York magazine earlier this year, when the possibility of razing the building was first announced. "When a fellow museum does the same thing, it’s even worse — it’s a form of betrayal."

Paul Goldberger from Vanity Fair said it well, writing, "The Williams and Tsien building is also the last remnant of something approaching reasonable scale on West 53rd Street, a block that seems ever bigger, ever more corporate, ever less diverse. Tearing down the folk-art museum may make sense by MoMA’s measure of things, but it is hard to see how it makes New York a better place."

MoMA did not state a time frame or budget for the redesign. Check back for updates on the upcoming expansion.

Watch This Mesmerizing Slow-Motion Footage Of New Yorkers Waiting For The Subway

Adam Maygar, while aboard a train passing through Grand Central, took this beautiful slow-motion footage of people waiting on the subway platform. The video, "Stainless, 42 Street (excerpt)," has the mesmerizing quality of making the viewer feel as if they're able to press "pause" in real life, while studying the diverse facial expressions of a diverse set of strangers.

Maygar described the project, according to Gothamist, as "an endless row of living sculptures brought together by the same subway line, the same direction, the same intention of taking the train to get caught and carried away by the urban flow. All their motions slowed down, they are graceful..."

In other words: Eight million people, eight million stories, one subway system.

Golden Globes Predictions We Want To See Come True

0
0
At Sunday night's Golden Globes, it's expected that "12 Years A Slave," "American Hustle," Bruce Dern, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto, Jennifer Lawrence and Matthew McConaughey will be among the big honorees in the film categories. But what of the underdogs? Ahead, seven long shots HuffPost Entertainment wants to see win at the 71st annual Golden Globes, even if we know better than to think they actually will.

Christian Bale wins Best Actor - Musical or Comedy

american hustle

"It's got to be the best we've ever done," Christian Bale says during "American Hustle." For him, it was? Bale's charm offensive in David O. Russell's comedy of mannerisms was one of the most free and easy performances the Oscar-winning star has ever given. Released from Batman's cowl (and the downcast stuff played out onscreen in "Out of the Furnace"), Bale makes his Irving Rosenfeld, an overweight and bald con man, into the kind of guy who can charm women who look like Amy Adams, as well as politicians, gangsters and federal agents. Bruce Dern will likely win Best Actor - Musical or Comedy for his sturdy work in "Nebraska," but it's Bale's character we'll be imitating for the foreseeable future.

Judi Dench wins Best Actress - Drama

philomena

Cate Blanchett has had both hands on the Best Actress race since "Blue Jasmine" was released in July, and while she's likely to earn the award at the Globes on Sunday (as well as the Academy Awards on March 2), that doesn't mean she's the only worthy candidate. Both Amy Adams (who is nominated at the Golden Globes in the Best Actress - Musical or Comedy category) and Judi Dench were real marvels this year. (Pour some out, too, for Sandra Bullock, Emma Thompson, Julie Delpy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Adele Exarchopoulos and Meryl Streep.) Dench's title role in "Philomena" reads like the kind of thing an upper-crust British actress could do in her sleep: an elderly woman searches for the son who was taken away from her 50 years earlier by a group of evil nuns. But as written by Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope, "Philomena" is bursting with moments of humor, and Dench revels in those opportunities. It looks like she's having the time of her life. (She even gets to say "clitoris.")

Greta Gerwig wins Best Actress - Musical or Comedy

frances ha review

As noted, 2013 was a great year for actresses, and that praise extends to Gerwig in "Frances Ha." This is peak Gerwig, the kind of Gerwig-y performance that Gerwig fans have been hoping to see from the actress for forever. She likely won't defeat Adams or Streep in this category at the Golden Globes, but if anyone nominated is positioned to pull a Merritt Wever, it's Gerwig.

Bradley Cooper wins Best Supporting Actor

american hustle

Cooper has turned himself into one of Hollywood's most interesting actors by eschewing blockbusters for character pieces like "Silver Linings Playbook," "The Place Beyond the Pines" and "American Hustle." His performance in "Hustle" is nominated here, and with good reason: as with Bale, Cooper has never been better than in Russell's comedy. His is a manic, wild-man performance, but one that packs an unexpected emotional punch in the whirling last act. Cooper also rocks curls in this movie, a bonus everyone can enjoy.

June Squibb wins Best Supporting Actress

nebraska review

Monuments should be built to honor June Squibb's "Nebraska" performance, a brassy, no-bull work of art. She stomps through "Nebraska" with a kind of gleeful disregard for decorum. Jennifer Lawrence is favored to win in this category for a similarly domineering role in "American Hustle," and that's fine ... so long as Squibb gets her face on Mt. Rushmore.

Spike Jonze wins Best Screenplay

spike jonze her

"Her" is probably not as wonderful as its rave reviews, but the film is still a great achievement, and much of that has to do with Jonze's script. It's just so original, even while aping off themes presented in "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," "Lost in Translation" and even the "Terminator" franchise. Jonze wrote one of the best human characters of the year in Scarlett Johansson's Samantha, an operating system that lives inside a computer. It's a trick worth recognizing.

"Please Mr. Kennedy" wins Best Original Song

Taylor Swift's "Sweeter Than Fiction" will probably win the Golden Globe in this category because she's Taylor Swift, but the best song from filmdom 2013 was "Please Mr. Kennedy" from "Inside Llewyn Davis." Because of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences obtuse rules, "Please Mr. Kennedy" isn't eligible for an Oscar (it was based, in part, on previous material). At the Globes, though, it's full-steam ahead. Puh-puh-please, Mr. HFPA, launch this track into outer space.

'Mein Kampf' Was A 2013 eBook Bestseller

0
0
As of yesterday, Mein Kampf is the top seller in Amazon's Propaganda & Political psychology section, and 12th in the Politics & Current Events section of the iTunes e-book store.

Print sales, however, have remained stagnant; it hasn't been on The New York Times's nonfiction bestseller list since the year of its release.

Why the sudden surge in interest? One explanation is that, while many versions of Mein Kampf exist in various formats, the 99 cent Kindle version was released in January of last year.

Another theory, which also explains the overnight popularity of Fifty Shades of Grey, is that people are more prone to purchasing embarrassing titles on their e-readers than in print.

Mein Kampf was published in two volumes, the first in 1925 and the second in 1926. The first briefly outlines Hitler's childhood before delving into his political involvements after the First World War. Although both volumes detail his anti-Semitic and anti-Communist views, the book is often studied as a work of political theory. Hitler wrote it in 1924 in a Bavarian jail.

The publisher of the 99 cent version asserts that the book is being purchased for academic reasons, stating, "With digital readers, no one faces the stigma of having a copy of Mein Kampf on their bookshelf or risks it being seen on a table and having visitors make false assumptions about their reasons for owning it. They can read it in the subway without fear of being mistaken for a racist just because they want to learn about history."

Yes, Tears For Fears Covered Animal Collective, Music Fans Everywhere Exploded

0

We repeat: The New Wave-tastic '80s band Tears for Fears came out of the shadows last month to cover that experimental band you like to name drop for indie music cred, Animal Collective. Understandably, the music world has since responded like this:

The rendition of "My Girls" came out on December 17, but we'd like to refocus your 2014 attention to the amazing cover because TEARS FOR FEARS. (Also, the diddy is popping up on social media once again.) They also recorded versions of Arcade Fire's "Ready to Start" and Hot Chip's "Boy From School."

And then there's this guy:

Emma Thompson, 'Saving Mr. Banks' Star, On P.L. Travers' Alleged Bisexuality, Gay Movie Roles

0
0
The new film "Saving Mr. Banks" is earning acclaim for its warts-and-all depiction of the infamously fractured relationship between Walt Disney and "Mary Poppins" scribe P.L. Travers, but some reviewers have pointed to the fact that the film glosses over Travers' alleged bisexuality.

Emma Thompson, who nabbed a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Travers, acknowledged this point in a new interview with The Advocate's Brandon Voss, calling the author "a real soul searcher."

"You can’t fit everything about a person’s life into two hours," Thompson said of the movie. Pointing to Travers' close (and possibly intimate) relationship with close friend Madge Burnand, she added, "'Saving Mr. Banks' is about a woman’s creative, artistic life. It’s a relief, quite frankly, because when is a movie about a woman not about her love life?"

Calling her gay fanbase "a source of great pride and happiness," Thompson, 54, said she would certainly be open to playing a lesbian character on the big screen. As it turns out, she even has another Academy Award winner in mind for her love interest.

"Well, I met Sandy Bullock at an awards thing a couple years ago, and she said to me, 'If I were gay, you’d be the one,'" she recalled. "I said, 'I’m there!'"

7 Ridiculously Easy Things To Do Today To Have A Better Morning Tomorrow (PHOTOS)

0
0
The most common complaint about mornings is that they're, well, mornings. We know few people who actually enjoy waking up early -- even more so in the winter, where you're greeted with bracing cold and depressing darkness. While we can't change that, we can offer you the ridiculously easy things you can do every day for a better morning.

Prep your breakfast and lunch before you go to sleep. That's one less thing to think about when your brain is still catching up to the rest of you.

Have your gym bag already packed. We're assuming that if you're reading this, you're an after-work gym person, not an A.M. workout type. Don't subject yourself to the indignities of hunting for smelly running shoes when you barely know what day it is.

Pick out your outfit, keep it in grabbing range. You'll be extra thankful about this if you wake up late.

Pre-load your coffee pot, then put your mug right next to it. If you can program your coffeemaker so that it automatically starts brewing when your alarm goes off, do that.

Put your keys by the door. Add a hook in your entryway (or use a small bowl on top of a side table or shelf), so you can get into the habit of always putting your keys in the same place. See also: Magnets.

Load & run the dishwasher. Two reasons: 1. It's nice to wake up and not have to look at a sink full of dirty dishes. 2. It'll be nice to come home and not have to look at a sink full of dirty dishes.

Charge your phone and computer. Create a charging station in an out-of-the-way corner, so the devices don't tempt you into doing unhealthy things like obsessively checking your email at midnight.

It's Hard To Believe That A Few Sheets Of Paper Can Do This

0
0
When you gaze upon Li Hongbo's stagnant statues, it's hard to believe the unusual works of art are made from paper. That is, until the artist stretches and morphs their shape, showing that even something that looks like a rock can have a dynamic animism.

"My interest in paper began when I published books. When it came to design, I had to consider paper -- what type of paper suited which book," Li says in the video.

Now, the former book editor turns paper into art, and boy are we glad he decided to make the switch.

Li mastered the traditional Chinese craft of "paper gourds," creating anything from abstract sculptures to toy guns. The technique, typically used in festive Chinese events like weddings, results in constructs that can be stretched, twisted, scrunched together and then released to their original form.

The Beijing-based artist has his own Facebook page and a growing following. Hopefully, his incredible art will continue to spread.

Marilyn Monroe's 'Lost Scrapbook' Photos Could Be Proof Of An Extramarital Affair

0

New photos of actress, model and singer Marilyn Monroe have surfaced and they may reveal the secrets of her love life.

The album, called "The Lost Scrapbook," contains photos that she hand-selected, compiled and captioned for photographer Sam Shaw. Newsweek published the photos in a special issue that was released on Jan. 9.

This collection contains many never-before-seen photos of Monroe. In one snapshot, she wears nothing but a towel, illustrating how private the album must have been. Monroe even commented on many of the photos in crayon, giving the scrapbook a truly personal and intimate feel.

Newsweek's Senior Editor Abigail Jones discussed the collection and why it might be proof that Monroe had an affair with Shaw while she was still married to Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller.

“These are the photos that she chose…. these are the feelings that she had,” Jones said. “The discovery of the scrapbook is also significant because it’s the first time we’re understanding her relationship with Sam Shaw.”

Shaw, who died in 1999, was the photographer who took the famous snapshots of Monroe in a billowing white dress, standing atop a subway grate while she filmed the movie "The Seven-Year Itch."

The scrapbook was brought to light by journalist Lawrence Schiller, who photographed Monroe while she shot her last movie, "Something's Got To Give." Schiller says that Shaw gave him the scrapbook in 1972, 10 years after Monroe's death, and even admitted that he and Monroe had an affair.
